Blu-ray Review: Midnight (1982)

A mother and her offspring murder a little girl (that damn Jimmy Peterson’s sister) caught in a bear trap because they think she’s a demon, and then perform a satanic ritual on the body… “pot, kettle, black” there, eh cats n’ creeps? Anyway, so begins John Russo’s 1982 opus Midnight, which just so happens to have recently had a spiffy Blu-ray release from the fine fiends over at Severin. Cheering up the proceedings, young Nancy (Melanie Verliin) catches static from her priest in confessional for admitting she likes to fuck, then heads home where she has to fend off the advances of her drunken, police officer step-father (played to the horny hilt by Reservoir Dogs‘ Lawrence Tierney)… because fucking is reserved for her boyfriend and not old-ass character actors (wisely so). Heading out, she’s harrassed by a dude in a car who wants to pay her for sex, before becoming the object of affection for two horny dudes in a

Blu-ray Review: Alone in the Dark (1982)

Dan Potter (The A-Team‘s Howlin’ Mad Murdock himself, Dwight Schultz in a milquetoast turn) has recently taken a job as a doctor in Dr. Leo Bain’s (Halloween‘s Donald Pleasence) unorthodox lunatic asylum called the Haven. Speaking of the ol’ Haven, those hallowed halls are also home to some real Grade-A psychos: deranged army vet Frank (Jack Palance), church burner Byron “Preacher” Sutcliff (Martin Landau), mountain-sized pedo Ronald (The Running Man‘s opera-singing one man E.L.O.; Dynamo, Erland van Lidth), and selfie-adverse serial killer nicknamed “the Bleeder” (Phillip Clark, who’s character dons a hockey mask to do his dirty dealings… just like Jason Voorhees did in Friday the 13th: Part 3-D, released just a few months earlier…but who was first is a topic of debate); a qwazy quartet that believe Potter murdered their former doctor (whom they all loved), but who in truth took another job. As fate would have it, a major power outage looms in Potter’s future, and the resulting

Movie Review: 3 From Hell Steelbook

On September 28, 2021, Lionsgate unleashed 3 From Hell exclusively on Steelbook. Being a fan of the Firefly trilogy and Rob Zombie, I had to get my hands on a copy. Let’s begin with the cover, after all, it is the first thing you see. The plastic outer cover features artwork of Baby (Sheri Moon Zombie), Winslow (Richard Brake), and Otis Firefly (Bill Moseley) along with the title, and it’s fantastic! The artwork is brilliantly done. Once the plastic hardcover slides off the steelbook is revealed and has the same artwork except with skeletal faces on the front and three caskets on the back. It screams Rob Zombie! The case has a great metal feel and weight. Inside the case are two discs and a card with the digital copy’s information. The first disc has the classic 3 From Hell art that was released when the movie was first announced. The second disc also has the Firefly family. First came

4k-UHD Review: Children of the Corn (1984)

Burt (Peter Horton) and Vicky (The Terminator franchise’s Linda Hamilton) are a hot, young, upwardly-mobile couple headin’ cross country to Seattle where ol’ Burt is all hot n’ horny to begin his career as a physician. Along the way they run over a kid in Nebraska as one does, and find themselves lost in the seemingly abandoned town of Gatlin. Well, as fate, and Stephen King (yup, this is based on a short story by the monstrous maestro himself from 1977) would have it, the town’s children have murdered each and every adult in town, and are really into cornfield sacrifices to an evil deity known as “He Who Walks Behind the Rows”. Chief among that corn-based antichrist’s arcane acolytes are the Preacher-man… err, child Issac (John Franklin) and his enforcer Malachi (Courtney Gains, he of The ‘Burbs fame), and both are hell-bent on making Burt and Vicky the latest offerings to their dark god, but unexpected help may turn

Movie Review: Demigod, A Twist On The Cerunnos Myth

From award-winning filmmaker, Miles Doleac comes a new tale of terror, Demigod, a macabre twist6 on the Cernunnos myth. In this supernatural tale, Robin (Rachel Nichols) and her boyfriend Leo (Yohance Myles) journey to her grandfather’s cabin after he passes away. After the couple encounters a hunter (Doleac) and his daughter they return to the comfort of the cabin and its warm fireplace, and soon fall asleep not knowing that a backwoods cult will soon take them. The couple, the hunter and his daughter, along with several others are taken to the heart of the forest where they will be released and hunted by a demigod. First, when are people going to learn to stay away from cabins in the woods? We’ve seen it a lot. Luckily, the film doesn’t feature many other tropes so we’ll let it slide this time. The story itself is unique and manipulates its environment around the story, not the other way around, turning its

DVD Review: The Haunting Horror ‘The Power’ Is A “Must See” Movie

Set in 1974 London, where Britain prepares for electrical blackouts, writer-director Corinna Faith‘s (The Innocents) haunting new film The Power introduces us to Rose Williams‘ character Val, a nurse on her first day working at the hospital. As they prepare for the lights to go out, Val’s anxiety begins to build we see the nurse walk the halls and tend to patients with only a lamp to light her way. It doesn’t take long for terrifying things to begin to happen. The hospital setting is spooky enough all on its own but when the lights go out the tension builds and things escalate quickly. As if the setting, the dark, and the bad treatment Val experiences weren’t bad enough, paranormal activity manifests itself and seizure-like spells begin to take hold that leaves Val’s body contorted in unnatural ways, and she experiences random blackouts that leave her finding herself in terrifying situations. The film features fantastic cinematography. The decision to film

Movie Review: ‘The Old Ways’ Is One Of The Best Horror Films Of The Year

Director Christopher Alender and writer Marcos Gabriel (Muppets Now, Memorial Day) take us to a dark and ancient place in the supernatural horror film The Old Ways. The film centers on Cristina, a journalist who has returned to her native lands to write an article about disappearing cultures. After traveling to a forbidden place Cristina wakes up in chains in a strange old home in the jungle where an old man and a bruja (witch) refuse to set her free because a demon lies within her. The film takes the horrors of possession, fear, depression, inner turmoil, and demons and spins them into a tale that has the best of both the old world and the new. Yes, this is a horror movie, but it is also about so much more. It’s about a woman coming home to literally face her demons, it’s about learning understanding, and respect, it is about family, and finding your place in the world. There

Movie Review: Malignant Is Absolutely Insane

It’s been five years since horror heavy hitter James Wan has directed a horror film, well, he’s back with the new movie Malignant. Earlier this month he promised it would be “new and different”, by god he was right. You’ve never seen anything like Malignant before! I will tell you this, I was not prepared for the level of bat shit insanity this movie reaches when I hit play. And it was awesome! The film centers on Madison (Anabelle Wallis), trapped in an abusive marriage. After a head injury, she suddenly begins to have shocking visions of grisly murders. Madison’s torment worsens as she discovers that her waking dreams are in fact terrifying realities and her past is coming back to haunt her. Anabelle Wallis does an amazing job of giving viewers a relatable character that they can have sympathy for. When the big twist comes, she rises to the occasion. Speaking of the twist, all I can say is

Movie Review: Blood Conscious

I recently sat down to watch the new horror film Blood Conscious by writer-director Timothy Covell. The film follows Brittany (DeShawn White), her brother Kevin (Oghenero Gbaje), and her boyfriend Tony (Lenny Thomas) as they head to a cabin to join her mother and father for some family time. Unfortunately, things go very wrong for the trio when they find that an armed man has murdered their parents and their neighbors. His reasoning, they weren’t people anymore, they were demons. This movie has a character problem. Right off to bat we learn that Tony’s a prick, Brittany lets him walk over her and her brother and Kevin is weak. These are the characters we are meant to care for, cheer for? They are mostly unlikable with Kevin being the only halfway redeemable character in the film. The next issue are the demons. They look like people and act like people, save for a higher level of aggression. The fact that

Blu-ray Review: The Fourth Victim (1971)

Ol’ rich-bitch Arthur (Michael Craig) discovers his wife tits up (or more accurately “down”) in the swimming pool, and the police get suspicious… especially since this is his third marriage featuring a murdered wife and a large life insurance policy. Without anything to directly tie the Art-ful Dodger to the case, he walks away free as a beastly bird… seems reasonable… His troubles are far from over however, as soon he’s hitched to a woman named Julie Spencer (Carroll Baker) who just showed up a-swimming in the same pool wife number trois met her untimely demise…. but as one would expect, Jules has more to her than meets the eye, and soon the couple are balls deep in suspicion as the tension between them grows, and the shadow of death grows longer! Will Julie become the fourth mother fuckin’ victim? Lord, I wish that was the title… The first thing one should realize about The Fourth Victim, is that this
