Blu-ray Review: John Carpenter’s Vampires (1998)

Jack Crow (James Woods) leads a team of hard-livin’ vampire killers (seriously they dig on hookers and booze as much as ending the undead existence of fang-bangers) who excel at what they do… so much so they attract the attention of a recently resurrected vampire lord (Thomas Ian Griffith), Jan Valek by name, who begins acting bloody revenge. His team ripped to shreds, Crow and his second-in-command Montoya (Daniel Baldwin), along with a newly vampiric hooker named Katrina (Sheryl Lee), attempt to stop Valek from retrieving a holy doo-dad that’ll give those beastly bloodsuckers the ability to walk in the sunlight while seeking vengeance for their fallen comrades. Some people say ol’ John Carpenter made great flicks in the 80’s, then sort of lost his touch… people say a lot of wrong things. Sure there were some rough patches here and there (1995’s Village of the Damned remake and 1996’s Escape From L.A. were fun but had their faults), but

Blu-ray Review: Ghosts of Mars (2001)

Lieutenant Melanie Ballard (Natasha Henstridge) and a cadre of Mars cops are called out to a remote mining colony to pick up a prisoner, one Desolation Williams (Ice Cube), and transport him back to civilization…and more thorough incarceration. Once there they discover that nothing is left of the colony but mutilated corpses. Our heroes all have their theories as to what happened, but the simplest explanation eludes them…centuries old space lizard ghosts have possessed the miners and turned them into some sort of primal street gang lead by Big Daddy Mars (Richard Cetrone)…you know, like any other given Tuesday. Of course this makes survival a bit dicey for our heroes, but thankfully Desolation’s hard-ass pals show up to form an uneasy alliance making Operation: Save Ass a smidge more doable. I’m just going to come out and say it; Ghosts of Mars takes waaaay more shit from horror hounds than it deserves. While admittedly not one of John Carpenter’s best

New ‘Halloween’ Trailer Is Shot Documentary Style

The new trailer for Halloween is shot as if it is from a crime documentary and we’re digging it. It’s fitting, seeing that the David Gordan Green-directed movie features a documentary crew working making a feature about the masked killer. “Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) comes to her final confrontation with Michael Myers, who has haunted her since she narrowly escaped his killing spree on Halloween night four decades ago.” “A British documentary crew comes to the States to visit Michael in prison for a retrospective of the maniac’s night of terror — but their project becomes way more interesting when Myers escapes custody, retrieves his signature mask and seeks revenge on Laurie, with others naturally being part of his impressive career body count along the way. In the decades following the fateful Halloween night that forever altered the former babysitter’s life, Laurie has armed and prepped herself for Michael’s inevitable return — to the detriment of her family, including

New ‘Halloween’ Teaser Gives Fans A Taste Of The Soundtrack

Last week, a fake song from Halloween spread like fire online. Today, we have the first real taste of the soundtrack. Not only is John Carpenter, creator of the franchise, executive producing Blumhouse’s new Halloween, he also composed the soundtrack, along with his son Cody, and Daniel Davies (Lost Themes). Sacred Bones Records has now released a short teaser of the main theme, giving fans a taste of what’s to come. Sacred Bones Records describes the new soundtrack: “The new soundtrack pays homage to the classic Halloween score that Carpenter composed and recorded in 1978 when he forever changed the course of horror cinema and synthesizer music with his low-budget masterpiece. Several new versions of the iconic main theme serve as the pulse of Green’s film, its familiar 5/4 refrain stabbing through the soundtrack like the Shape’s knife. The rest of the soundtrack is just as enthralling, incorporating everything from atmospheric synth whooshes to eerie piano-driven pieces to skittering electronic

Blu-ray Review: In The Mouth of Madness (1995)

Insurance investigator John Trent (Sam Neill) has found himself locked away in an insane asylum as the world turns to shit outside it’s walls. How in the hell did he end up here? Lovecraft surrogate Sutter Cane (Jurgen Prochnow); a huge cash cow for Arcane publishing. Said investigation takes our no-nonsense hero, an Arcane employee Linda Styles (Julie Carmen), to the small New England town of Hobbs End…a central location in Cane’s fiction. Once there they discover that not only are the characters in Cane’s stories real, but Cane himself holds the town in a grip of eldritch evil, as what he writes comes to demonic life! Will our hero escape from the madness alive? Okay, we already know he will…but what of the insanity he faces after? Filled to the brim with ancient evil, cursed villagers, and creatures
