Three Films Based On One Book, Who Got It Right?

In August of 1938, readers of Astounding Science-Fiction Magazine beat the summer heat by reading a chilling science-fiction story that took them to the heart of Antarctica where a group of scientists was trapped along with a shape-shifting extraterrestrial. That story was Who Goes There?, by Don A. Stuart, the pen name of John W. Campbell Jr. The story was later reprinted in book form where Campbell used his real name. The novella eventually spawned three movies, the first one in 1951 titled The Thing from Another World that was followed up by John Carpenter’s 1982 cult classic The Thing (it spawned a video game as well as a series of comics.) which was followed up by the 2011 prequel using the same name. Three movies based on one book. The film industry is known for taking a book and making it into a film with mixed results, usually negative. So the question remains, out of the three films based

John Carpenter Skipped A Few Of Those Terrible “Halloween” Sequels

Out of the 10 films in the Halloween franchise, one’s a master piece, two are good, one (Season of the Witch) is an underrated outlier, and 6 are pretty much crap. There’s a lot of convoluted and pretty terrible mythology, turning Michael Myers, one of horror’s most terrifying human monsters into a muddled mess of Shatner masks and kitchen knives. Full disclosure, I haven’t seen every Halloween film. But hey, neither has John Carpenter! But with the newest entry, Carpenter hopes to bring the 40 year old franchise back to its roots. In an interview with Rotten Tomatoes, Carpenter admitted he had skipped a few entries of the franchise he founded stating “You know, you know I talked about the Halloweens for a long time, the sequels — I haven’t even seen all of them. I don’t even know what really was there.” Carpenter has only had sporadic involvement in the film world the past few years, last releasing poorly

The (Stranger) Thing

In 2002 fans of the movie The Thing where able to partake in a new chapter of the film’s universe by playing the 3rd person survival horror game, ‘The Thing’ where players take on the role of Captain Blake, a Special Forces soldier sent in with a rescue team to find survivors at the doomed U.S. Outpost 31 from John Carpenter’s film. Long story short, the events of the film and this game were part of some nefarious plot by a Biotechnology company called Gen-Inc who has subterranean research facilities all around Antarctica studying the alien organism in which a certain strain of the “Virus” was developed to be used in Biological Warfare.
