Hantavirus OR How I learned to stop worrying and understand the Virus!

With sensationalist headlines and a plethora of memes, people can’t seem to stop talking about the Hantavirus outbreak on the MV Hondius, a Dutch cruise ship that’s experiencing a viral outbreak. So, why am I here talking about it? Well, it’s kind of in my wheelhouse (no pun intended) as we’re looking at a Zoonotic Disease, something I know a bit about in my past career life working with animals! Long story short, you have nothing to worry about. The long story: Hantavirus is known to science as it was first seen around the Korean War, where soldiers in damp, dirty living conditions exposed them to their unwanted campmates…rodents. Rodents like rats and mice, but also through critters like moles, etc, can carry the Hantavirus and spread it through bites, their saliva, urine, or scat. Usually, when it comes to the urine and scat, it’s an aerosol, meaning it’s in the air and you can breathe it in, usually in

Who really was Yasuke?

Ubisoft’s upcoming historical fiction game Assassin’s Creed: Shadows is drawing a lot of attention with one of the main protagonists in the game being the legendary Yasuke, an African Samurai. This has caused an uproar online as a line has been drawn in the sand by armchair historians and gaming gatekeepers who are either for or against the character’s existence and cherry-pick facts from a tree that barely had any fruit on it to begin with. So, who was Yasuke? After around a month of researching, this is what I was able to come up with. Let’s first deal with the elephant in the room on this, Yasuke did exist as there are records both European and Japanese that talk about him, though his real name is unknown, but how he got the name “Yasuke” is coming up. Since he arrived in Japan in 1579 with Jesuit missionaries, along with Portuguese traders, he more than likely came from Mozambique before

Movie Review: Night of the Blood Monster (1970) – Blue Underground 4k/Blu-ray combo

It’s the 1600’s and things are looking rather shitty for local witches ‘round ol’ London-town thanks to Judge Jeffreys (the legendary Sir Christopher Lee (who has appeared in so many things, I’m just going to do this) who hates them as much as he does rebels against the King… which is to say a lot. I mean sure he’s still willing to fuck the witches (this is a Jess Franco film after all), but he’s just as willing to burn them alive (doubly so if they fail to put out). His presence makes life truly a pain in the ass for young Harry Selton (Hans Haas Jr.), a rebel engaged to a witch named Mary (Franco regular Maria Rohm, Marquis de Sade’s Justine, Venus in Furs to name a few), and when they are incarcerated the Joltin’ Judge may face a full-on revolution! Brimming with a large number of costumed extras, battle sequences, and some ornate sets, it’s obvious that

Game Review: ‘Ad Infinitum’

War is Hell, and so is the human mind, but when both collide, how can one tell one nightmare from another? This is what awaits players in Ad Infinitum. I’ve been keeping an eye on this game since I became the Gamer Guy here at Horror Fuel, and now that it’s finally here, you can bet I’m all over it! I want to give Hekate Studio and NACON a big thank you for sending over a copy! In Ad Infinitum, a young, troubled German soldier is living a nightmare that’s taking him back and forth between the trenches of WWI, and his family’s Berlin mansion. Along with reliving the horror of what he saw in combat and the war within his household, he is also facing otherworldly terrors. Now, on to the game itself! Ad Infinitum‘s controls remind me a lot of the Amnesia games with how you interact with the game’s environment, so it’s easy to learn and remember

Who Really Was America’s First Serial Killer?

The recent installment of the video game series, The Dark Pictures Anthology titled The Devil In Me, focused on the exploits of the infamous 19century serial killer H.H. Holmes. In the game as well as pretty much anywhere else you always hear that Holmes (real name Herman Webster Mudgett) is “America’s First Serial Killer”. This title is only half true. Holmes is probably America’s first highly publicized Serial Killer thanks to there being advances in communications at the time, photographs, and 42 states with decent size populations for the time to hear and read about his exploits and trial. But H.H. Holmes is not the first serial killer to spill the blood of his fellow citizens on its soil. The title really belongs to the Harpe Brothers. The Harpe Brothers, Joshua (also known as Micajah), and William (also known as Wiley) were both born either in Scotland OR the British Colony of North Carolina in the 18th century. The life

Childhood Ruined Part 1: Do You Know The Muffin Man?

Nursery rhymes were a big part of our childhood, but have you ever wondered where they came from? We will be exploring one in this episode of our new multi-part series “Childhood Ruined”. Today we will expose the truth behind “The Muffin Man.” Do [or “Oh, do”] you know the muffin man, The muffin man, the muffin man. Do you know the muffin man, Who lives on Drury Lane? Yes [or “Oh, yes”], I know the muffin man, The muffin man, the muffin man, Yes, I know the muffin man, Who lives on Drury Lane? Like most nursery rhymes, the song sounds innocent enough, but its dark creation was actually designed as a warning. Of course, the version we know now has been watered down. The rhyme was born as a reminder to stay away from “The Muffin Man,” a serial killer who actually lived on Drury Lane. Originating in the early 1600s, the song is actually about “The Drury
