Movie Review: Hunter Hunter Is A Dark Horror Thriller Done Right

When I sat down and hit the play button to watch writer-director Shawn Linden’s Hunter Hunter I wasn’t sure what to expect. What I got was a great, truly dark film about family and desperation. The film centers on a couple, Joseph (Devon Sawa) and Anne (Camille Sullivan), and their daughter Reneè (Summer H. Howell) living off the grid in the remote wilderness. They make their money by trapping so when a wolf begins to steal the animals in their traps they set out to hunt it down. When they stumble across the wolf eating an arm they realize there is another killer (Nick Stahl) lurking in their own backyard. First off, let me give a warning to animal lovers, Hunter Hunter is going to be a bit hard for you to watch. Just cover your eyes when you have to though because the movie is worth it. Hunter Hunter is a dark, tension-filled, gripping tale and at some points

Zodiac Killer’s Cipher Finally Broken After 50 years

In the 1960 and 70s, the Zodiak Killer left Californians gripped by terror. After many taunting letters were sent to The San Fransico Chronicle newspaper, a coded letter, known both as the “Zodiac Cipher” and the “340 Cipher” (named because it features 340 characters) arrived in 1969 and reportedly would reveal the real name of the killer if broken. As for how the Killer got his nickname, he signed his letters as the “Zodiac Killer.” Five decades later, a group of private citizens is now claiming that they have decoded the message after fourteen years of work. The team, spread across the globe, includes American software engineer David Oranchak, Australian mathematician Sam Blake, and Belgian programmer Jarl Van Eyeke. Law officials, including the FBI, have been unable to break the code. In a statement to CNN, Oranchack said, “It was incredible. It was a big shock. I never really thought we’d find anything because I had grown so used to

Paul Bateson: The Serial Killer Who Starred In ‘The Exorcist’

Did you know that a real-life serial killer starred in The Exorcist? In 1972, director William Friedkin saw Paul Bateson perform a cerebral angiography in the New York University radiology lab. Wanting to keep things as real as possible, when Friedkin was making The Exorcist the next year, he arranged for the same procedure to be filmed in a hospital by real doctors and technicians. Friedkin was impressed by the way Bateson performed the real procedure the year before and invited him to be included in the scene as a radiographer not knowing of his crimes. Born in Lansdale, Pennsylvania, he was the son of a metallurgist. In the early 60s, he joined the Army and became an alcoholic while serving in Germany. When his service came to an end, he returned to Lansdale before moving to New York in 1964 where he began living a double life, working as a radiologist during the day, and exploring his sexuality and

Blu-ray Review: Cold Light of Day (1989)

Presenting the murder biz of one Cranley Gardens serial killer, named Denis Nielsen in real life but having the handle of Jorden March (Bob Flag, sporting one hell of a wig) here in a move that just screams “We ain’t payin’ shit to use this asshole’s real name”, and his hapless (seriously, this dude just kills people… he doesn’t really know why he does it, the cops never really figure it out, and besides a drop of childhood trauma the film never really seems to give a damn either) journey through a wicked wonderland of diabolical dismemberment. Speaking of which, the gritty pseudo-real aesthetic that permeates this fright flick is undoubtedly the greatest asset it possesses, as it’s gritty, unpolished visuals give the affair (an endless parade of picking up male victims that won’t be missed, followed by the hoary ol’ chestnuts of sex and murder… all of which are presented in an unglamorous, nearly mundane manner) a near documentary

Blu-ray Review: Dahmer (2002)

Remember when mother fuckin’ Hawkeye played (literal) man-eater Jeffrey Dahmer? Yeah, me freakin’ either… but he did, so here we are! The long and the short of Dahmer goes as follows: going out of his way to prove he’s no Willy fuckin’ Wonka, chocolate factory worker Jeffrey Dahmer (Jeremy Renner) prowls Milwaukee, Wisconsin, for young male victims to turn into brain dead (and eventually dead dead) sexual playthings. Along the way, he reminisces about earlier murder biz, and his relationship with his pappy (Willard himself, Bruce Davison) who thinks something is off about his boy, but isn’t sure just what. It’s non-stop spills and thrills as we learn just what this serial killin’ scamp was up to before his ass got thrown in the hole forever and a day… Besides boasting a gritty, almost grindhouse style (in terms of aesthetic if not on screen carnage) the main draw to this flick is the performance of Renner who manages to make
