Movie Review: Division 19 (2017)

In the astounding future year 2039, vox populi decides what prisoners wear, consume, watch…and most importantly who they fight via an online service called Panopticon TV. Before you can say “Fuck…The Running Man was a great film, ol’ PTV decides to increase their scope and make a whole town under their consumer’s whims as their most famous convict superstar, Hardin Jones (Jamie Draven), has gone rogue, escaped, and joined up with an underground resistance movement dedicated to put the kibosh on Panopticon. Filled with hyperactive editing, jarring tonal shifts, and an ultra-derivative plot (as well as The Running Man, District 9 is cribbed liberally as well), Division 19 has a lot going against it right out of the gate. For all of it’s high-concept, just a few minutes from now, social commentary…those elements aren’t given a chance to simmer and develop due to the fact that every time things get interesting in the ol’ world building department along comes a

Blu-ray Review: The Deadly Mantis (1957)

You want to know about the state of radar in late 1950’s america? Well The Deadly Mantis has your ass covered bro! The opening gives us this lesson as well as an excuse as to just what the hell our soldiers and boats would be doing the absolute middle of nowhere…not sure if the audience for a film about a giant insect needs this level of world building, but whateves. After a mammoth “bone” is discovered at the North Pole, scientists do their science bag and determine a frickin’ giant (and if the title of this baby is to be believed…deadly) prehistoric mantis has woken up from centuries of slumber and is on the loose…and if our stock-footage (of which this film contains an inordinate amount) military might, along with Paleontologist Dr. Nedrick Jackson (William Hopper) and his photo-journalist gal pal Marge Blaine (Alix Talton), can’t punch him a new asshole, civilization could very well be doomed as the creature

Blu-ray Review: Krypton: The Complete First Season (2018)

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment provided me with a free copy of the Blu-ray I reviewed in this blog post. The opinions I share are my own. Hearing that a Krypton based TV joint was being produced that wouldn’t focus on ol’ Superman made me as nervous as a cat nervous about shit that makes cats nervous (Disclaimer: I’m not a cat). Let’s see if that case of jitters was justified… Krypton concerns the adventures of Supes’ grand-pappy Seg-El (Cameron Cuffe) who resides in the Kryptonian city of Kandor 200 years before the planet is fated to explode…and let me tell ya; Seg’s having a time of it. The House of El is on the shit list after Seg’s grandfather got the ax for suggesting that their is life on planets other than Krypton, and our homeboy is caught up in the plottings of shifty chief magistrate, Daron-Vex (Elliot Cowan), who’s daughter Nyssa Vex (Wallis Day) Seg is set to marry

Blu-ray Review: Nemesis (1992)

In 2027 Los Angeles, cybernetic bounty hunter Alex Raine (Olivier Gruner) finds himself on the losing end of a battle with a group of equally robotic terrorists named the Red Army Hammerheads. After healing up, and entering one of those existential crises man/machines often find themselves in…or so I’m told, Alex is kidnapped by his old boss, Commissioner Farnsworth (Tim Thomerson) for one last mission; stop his old girlfriend, the android Jared (Marjorie Monaghan), from delivering security details of an upcoming summit between the U.S. and Japan to Angie-Liv (Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa); the leader of the Hammerheads…and if he refuses the bomb in his heart, placed courtesy of Farnsworth, will explode. But, things aren’t exactly what they seem with the R.A.H., and soon Alex is up to his eighty-six point five percent still human ass in bullets, bad guys, butt cheeks and…well killer robot skeletons; as one does. Holy shit Nemesis…what a fucking picture! This baby has it all; insane action

Movie Review: Mega Time Squad (2018)

Small time hood John (Anton Tennet) is having a shit run of luck; his (crime) boss Shelton (Jonny Brugh) treats him like turd, and he has to vacate the garage he lives in…and mostly everyone he encounters thinks he’s a bit of a nutless wonder. Aiming to prove them wrong, John and his dim pal Gaz (Arlo Gibson) set out to swipe a bundle o’ cash from a gang of Chinese hoods muscling into Shelton’s territory from the antique shop they use as a drop off. In the process he steals a magic time travelling bracelet (as one does), and when he’s ratted out for stealing from the boss he begins making small leaps through time…and assembling a criminal gang of his own…comprised strictly of time displaced versions of himself (who take on the eponymous moniker Mega Time Squad). Speaking of time, will John be able to foster a romance with Shelton’s sister (Hetty Gaskell-Hahn), avoid the Chinese time demon

Movie Review: SheBorg (2016)

Dylan (Whitney Duff) and Eddie (Daisy Masterman) are two young anarchists spray painting shit and runnin’ from the fuzz…not exactly the credentials that would lead you to believe they could stand up to a menace from beyond the stars. Speaking of which, when her intergalactic jailers fail to melt her with their caustic barf, the space criminal SheBorg (Emma-Louise Wilson) hightails it to Earth where she takes up residence at a puppy farm and turns the employees, and anyone stupid enough to trespass on the property into members of her canine flesh devouring, cellphone licking, cyborg army. Soon our counter-culture heroines, along with a dunce of a punk rocker named Rik ( Mark Entwistle) attempt to liberate those helpless pups and run afoul of the mechanical minions of that star-born femme fatale. Will they have the skills (or dumb…and I do mean “dumb” luck) necessary to defeat that tin-plated robo-bitch and save the planet…or a small patch of Australia anyway?

Blu-ray Review: Double Dragon (1994)

In the amazing future year 2007, the villainous businessman/shadow monster Koga Shuko (Robert Patrick, who looks absolutely preposterous and gobbles up scenery like he’s hitting the mac n’ cheese trough at the local Golden Corral) lords over the city of New Angeles. Not for nothing, he has also come in possession of half of a mystical medallion (called the Double Dragon) that when made whole grants it’s owner some of those mystic powers the kids are so into these days. Well, humanity can breathe easy as the other half is in the possession of Satori (Julia Nickson) and her two adopted sons Billy and Jimmy Lee (Scott Wolf and Mark Dacascos)…underground karate tournament fighters and favorite targets for Bo Abobo (Nils Allen Stewart…who seems to be having the time of his life in the role…as does everyone in this thing honestly), leader of the Mohawk Gang and frequent steroid abuser. Soon Shuko kills Satori, tuns Abobo into an outrageous monster,

Movie Review: South Mill District (2018)

A few days ago…or longer if you are reading this from the far flung future, or next week (I’m a regular Criswell!) I reviewed one of my fav flicks I’ve laid eerie eyeballs on in a damn sight; namely Joe Meredith’s Teratomorph (which you can read my wicked words concerning said picture right here). In that revoltin’ review I mentioned there was more to the story contained in another film titled South Mill District…guess what I’m reviewing (here’s some hints…read the damn title of the review…now read the three words before “guess”…) South Mill District details the story of two former test subjects (played by Meredith and Cidney Meredith) that were part of a program to combine human and alien DNA (via using mutated symbiotic giant spiders) courtesy of a shady organization known as EonCorp. A decade after an interplanetary war, these two wander the desolate landscape waiting for the final stage of the mutation raging within them to manifest.

Movie Review: Teratomorph (2019)

Teratomorph begins with a child poking an amazingly fucked up corpse with a stick…and we are off to the races boils n’ ghouls! Following that we learn an outbreak of the Havoc Virus (engineered by combining alien material with spiders to outrageously nightmare inducing effect) is running rampant, and that aforementioned kid (Elijah Meredith) and a comely pistol packin’, alien fluid extracting, mama named Svetlana (Cidney Meredith) try to survive in the hell left in the wake of this alien hell! Teratomorph is well and truly the shit my creeps! This fright flick is loaded to the revoltin’ rafters with absolutely off-the-charts levels of gore, stop motion giant spiders, and enough alien/human genetic mutations cum body horror to make John Carpenter and David Cronenberg jump back and say “Damn, fool!” …all realized in jaw dropping, beautifully realized, practical effects ghoulish glory designed and executed like a mother fucker by Writer/Director/Producer/Creature Designer/Special Effects Artist Joe Meredith (along with James Bell). Honestly
