Friday the 13th Gets Lucky

A Few Words From Our Ms. Palmer “What a piece of shit! No one’s gonna see this crap!” — Actress Betsy Palmer aka Pamela Vorhees The late, esteemed critic, Roger Ebert, coined the phrase “Dead Teenager Movie” and I have stated several times that Jaws 2 arguably gets technical credit as the first one. While teenagers in peril was a long standing theme and used over and over again, it’s the sequel to Spielberg’s game changing shark movie that lined them up one after another for the monster to pick off. Jaws 2 gave the designer sheen to killing off teens. It wasn’t a grainy “B Movie” that played part of a double bill at the drive in. This was wide screen Panavision and a 50 million budget. While there was no nudity, the underlying “have sex and die” motif was there with a killer in the form a pissed off female Great White Shark. The original 1978 Halloween fine

Halloween’s Biggest Fan Builds An Insane Replica Of The Myers House

Kenny Caperton may be one of the most hardcore ‘Halloween’ fans on earth. A couple of years ago he built a perfect replica of the ‘Halloween’ house in his home town of Hillsborough, North Carolina, where he lives with his wife. The real Myers house is in South Pasadena, California, but Caperton built his down to the smallest detail and that’s pretty damn awesome! On Halloween Caperton will be throwing his seventh annual bash, complete with tours of the house, food, a pumpkin carving contest, a viewing of of ‘Halloween 3’ on a giant outdoor screen and writer/director Buddy Cooper will be there signing autographs and it’s all free to the public. For more information head to Caperton’s website and if you’re in the area stop by and check the place out.

Psycho II…The Slasher Dodges a Bullet

Norman Bates Is Coming Home… Summer, 1983. No Internet. No DVD extras. No “sneak peaks.” There were a handful of magazines to get your entertainment and especially your horror news and Fangoria was mine. I got my first subscription in 1980 and kept it through most of high school. At one point my mother asked me, “Are you sure you don’t want Playboy or something?” Unlike Norman Bates, I had plenty of girlfriends. Boobs I could see any time, but horror? That was serious shit and it came in the mail addressed to me. The slasher film dominated 80s horror. Carpenter’s Halloween hit in 1978 and the original Friday the 13th was ripping off at its heels, and both birthed franchises that spanned an entire decade and beyond. Psychopaths with knives and a variety of tools populated movie houses and late night cable. Most horror scholars will acknowledge the sub genre was peaking around 1983. Friday the 13th was winding

Halloween III: A Second Look

Gather Round Your TV Sets, Kids “You don’t really know much about Halloween.” – Conal Cochran Oh, You Mean THAT Halloween Movie… It’s the one without Michael Myers. It has nothing to do with the other movies. This one sucks. Right? Well you’re right on two counts. Halloween III: Season of the Witch does not have Michael Myers. It is not connected in any way to the Jamie Lee Curtis storyline started with the 1978 John Carpenter classic and most importantly, it was never meant to. Halloween III is as misunderstood as it is reviled with most of the hostility for the film attributed to the concept of Cynema. “When the [ Halloween II ] script came in I thought it was…the anti-Halloween. All the things that Halloween did so well…had been tossed out the window…I understood that in the intervening time between the first movie and what was going to be the second movie that times had changed, audiences
