Movie Review: Terror In The Skies (2019)

Following an absolutely gorgeous opening sequence set in 1948 where a young boy who dreams of being a pilot is confronted by a gigantic bird of prey he can scarcely believe, we begin our journey into the investigation of preternatural beings who have made their home in the skies over Illinois for decades in Terror in the Skies; the latest cryptid-focused documentary from Small Town Monsters and their resident demonic director (and writer too) Supernatural Seth Breedlove (okay…maybe he isn’t supernatural, but he sure does talk about the creepy side o’ life quite a bit. Don’t believe me? Check out my revoltin’ reviews of some of his past docs here, and here)! First up we learn the history of this monster-laden land; including chit-chat about the Thunderbirds (called the Piasa Bird in this region) that tormented the Native Americans indigenous to ancient Illinois, and supposedly resided in a deep cave littered with human bones (a cave that some dude in

Movie Review: Scary Stories (2019)

To be honest, I was too old for Alvin Schwartz’s Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark series of books, but I was well aware of their existence thanks in no small part to the eye catching, nightmare enduing artwork contained within the tomes (courtesy of Stephen Gammell), but that doesn’t mean I wasn’t into a devious doc detailing the series creation and what it has meant to generations of fright fans n’ horror hounds! First thing you have to realize is that Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark was the most banned book of the 1990’s…and if that doesn’t give that shit unlimited horror biz street cred, I have no idea what would! Of course, that tumultuous moment is detailed in Cody Meirick’s documentary, but there is so much more ground that is covered! We get the genesis of the series creation (featuring interviews with Schwartz’s widow among other peers and family members) that paint a vivid picture

Movie Review: Hail Satan? (2019)

Beginning with a political rally in which The Satanic Temple endorses a candidate for office that supports prayer in schools (because if you allow for Jesus in school it will open the way for Satan as well); Director Penny Lane’s documentary Hail Satan? (and that “?” will come into play in this revoltin’ review in a tick) is off to the races! What follows that is an examination of the origins The Satanic Temple (striking an even balance between the religions theatricality and honest beliefs) as well as their plans for public acceptance, and their absolute insatiable lust to fuck with people that desperately need to be fucked with (i.e. religious groups that seem to adore abusing those different from themselves). Also included is a look at the o.g. Devil lovers; Anton Lavey’s Church of Satan and it’s carnival aesthetic and how it lead to the more political minded Temple (which does still contain the more showy trappings of the

Blu-ray Review: Life After Flash (2017)

Before I begin discussing Life After Flash, I feel it appropriate to share some thoughts on Flash Gordon. If you aren’t interested in such things…or having your’s cruelly uncharacteristically lay his soul bare, just skip down to the next paragraph. Anyway, back in December of 1980, my desire to see Flash Gordon was at an almost unbelievable level…and my parents blew my mind and agreed to drive me, and the prettiest girl in the second grade who agreed to be my date, many towns over (yes, I grew up in the literal middle of nowhere) to see the film…but mother nature had other plans; and a nor’easter (to those not in the know; Upstate New York has about 14 months of winter per year…at least it did back then) kept us in town, and Altman’s Popeye was what it had to be (and for the record, that is a charming film and a ton of fun…but it sure as hell

Movie Review: Eye of the Beholder: The Art of Dungeons & Dragons (2019)

Dungeon & Dragons; you can bet your arcane asses that a young Dan XIII spent many a lonely, female-less…I mean fun-packed afternoon consuming mass quantities of junk and battling all manner of monsters and maniacs with my erstwhile companions, and even though it’s been decades since I tossed the ol’ dice, I still have an infinity for the game and it’s associated imagery. Speaking of that imagery, you can bet demons to donuts that it was breathtaking, and sparked the imagination of player’s world wide (and let’s be honest, a Dungeonmaster’s job is a titch easier with visual aids)…and Eye of the Beholder explores it’s creation and history in impressive detail! Through ninety minutes we journey from the genesis of the game itself, through it’s earliest utilization of pen and ink illustrations, on to TSR’s (the company that published the game for those of you not in the know) creation of a full-time art department. We witness the growth of

Documentary Series “On The Trail Of Bigfoot” Delves Into The History Of The Legendary Beast

Bigfoot has been a thing of legend for centuries and the hunt for the beast with huge feet still continues to this day. The six-episode series was filmed in fourteen U.S. states and features over twenty interviews with witnesses, investigators, historians, and researchers on the American legend. “On the Trail of Bigfoot” walks viewers through the history of the Bigfoot phenomenon, starting with the earliest known reports of apelike creatures in the 1800s and bringing them all the way up to the modern day. During the filming of the nearly three-hour series, Breedlove experienced numerous unusual incidents and even managed to capture some mysterious eyeshine watching his camp from a nearby hillside. Along the way, he was joined by skeptics, Bigfoot enthusiasts and those intent on solving the mystery once and for all. Over the course of

Blu-ray Review: Ecco (1963) and The Forbidden (1966)

If you’ve never seen an entry from the world of Mondo documentaries steel your loins and prepare for a world of debauchery, boobs, bloodshed, boobs…and boobs. Speaking of which… Our putrid pals at Severin have just released yet another collection of Mondo entertainment with a Blu-ray containing two prime examples of the genre; 1963’s Ecco and 1966’s The Forbidden! Ecco, made in Italy but released stateside by American Mondo maven Bob Creese, features narration courtesy of George Sanders of all fucking people (you know, the voice of Shere Khan from Disney’s The Jungle Book)…and what is The Big G jawin’ about? A whole bunch of rando shit, including (but not limited to) A German dueling club, Japanese babies listening to the radio, karate, a cotillion contrasted with some sort of hobo hoedown (yeah…so far things are more “mundane” than “mondo”, a circus motorcycle stunt, mountain-based monasteries…after those yawn inducing sites we get a (chicken) blood drenched Satanic ceremony. Blu-ray Review: Mondo Freudo and Mondo Bizarro (1966)

If you are unfamiliar with the world of Mondo documentaries I can sum things up for you real quick; boobs and/or blood, fake-ass footage passed off as the real deal, and often a strong need for bleach eye drops. Let’s begin, shall we? Those sexy devils over at one of my fav houses of horror (and the bizarre); Severin Films have taken it upon themselves to wallow in the sea of bad taste and tackiness (one of my most cherished hang-outs boils n’ ghouls) and bring us two mondo docs on one lil’ ol’ Blu-ray…namely 1966’s Mondo Freudo and Mondo Bizarro. Mondo Bizarro, from Producers Bob Cresse and Lee Frost, begins as it should with a voyeuristic hidden camera view of a woman’s changing room…totally legit with it’s multiple cuts and camera angles…see what I was talking about up yonder boils n’ ghouls? Via the magic of stock footage we are whisked away on a whirlwind journey to the Bahamas
