Attack of the Rotten Tomatoes

The Sites Rotten Tomatoes ruined the summer 2017 boxoffice. The New York Times published this article on film review aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes (read here). The site has been around almost twenty years. I was first introduced to it back in 2003-2004. As the Internet gained more of a foothold, Rotten Tomatoes expanded its base; and now, according to this article, its power to influence box office performance. Sounds like those parents who subscribe to the “not my kid” mentality. Couldn’t possibly be US, it has to be the school, society…anyone but us and the bad product we made. I wrote a similar article, which could be a companion piece (here) a few months earlier when another finger pointing article on RT got some press. Can a website that amasses critical reviews have so much impact on a film’s box office performance? Hollywood spins it both ways whenever convenient. When it comes to a franchise like Transformers, the studios love

A Quartet Of Quintessential Stephen King Films To Be Featured In A New Blu-ray Collection

As is the case with most of you, my Little Monsters, I am eagerly awaiting the upcoming release of cinematic fare by that Master of the Macabre, Stephen King. We have The Dark Tower coming out on August 4th and IT which is due out on September 8th. But four iconic King horror films will also be released as a collection somewhere in between these two highly anticipated theatrical releases. The 1979 adaptation of Salem’s Lot, Stanley Kubrick’s film version of The Shining, King’s second anthology film, Cat’s Eye, and the original 1989 mini-series adaptation of IT are being compiled for a Blu-ray collection called the “King og Horror Collection”. Granted, each of these adaptations have already been released independently, but such a collection would be a great way to get all the films in one place and would also make a perfect gift to provide newer fans a look at how some of King’s nightmarish stories have been translated

Who Ya Gonna Call Out?

Critical Thinking Cynema is not a film review series. Ghostbusters 2016 got a lot of shit before it was released. This article is a companion piece to my previous “Critical Thinking” essay. Ghostbusters 2016 is not funny and as a result I will argue that it’s really not a movie. The trailer holds a record for most negative comments on YouTube. There is a reason for this, however, the venomous personal attacks against one of its stars, Leslie Jones, were unwarranted and inexcusable. All of that aside, I am going to use Cynema to explain with critical thinking, why this film was a failure and arguably not a true film. Ghostbusters 2016, Answer the Call, whatever…is another studio bait and switch. This has nothing to do with a female cast. It’s not a racial thing. So let’s get the misogyny and race baiting out of the way. Ghostbusters 2016 wouldn’t have been funny even if the original actors starred. Does

Critical Thinking

Actress and well known horror star, Caroline Williams tweeted an article this morning that dovetailed with several previous Cynema posts. Director Brett Ratner called out the dangers of aggregate film score sites like Rotten Tomatoes or the similar Metacritic in an article that devolves into a promo for his upcoming films. You can read it here: https://ew.com/movies/2017/03/23/ratner-tomatoes-scores/

Wondering If Your House Is Haunted? There’s An App For That!

Be honest, you have all wondered if your house, or the building down the street, is haunted. There’s now an app for that. Asif Ghafoor, the founder and CEO of Spacious, an online real estate company in Hong Kong, was inspired by Pokemon Go and augmented reality to create the app that reveals potentially haunted places and tells you how people at the location died. It focuses mainly on real estate where people were murdered or committed suicide. Augmented reality is something we’d been thinking about for a while. After Pokemon Go came out at the end of July, the success of that made us realize the potential for our app. We think it’s a technology first. We don’t think anyone else has done this before. Ghafoor stated.” The app is easy to use. After you have downloaded the app, simply point your phone down the street on real estate that is up for sale or rent. Then point the

People Are Using Frightening Decals To Discourage High-Beam Drivers

We’ve all been there, driving at night and out of the blue some A-hole will get behind you, following too closely with their bright lights on. It sucks. The light’s reflection in the rear-view mirror will just about blind you, making it hard to drive. Besides suffering from road rage and cussing them out under our breathes, there hasn’t been a lot we could do about it, until now. Now you can fight back. If bad drivers insist on being jerks the least you can do is freak them out. There is a company in China making a new type of window decal and they are creepy as hell. The decals come in a variety of life size images, including ghosts, monsters, and other freaky things. When bright lights hit your back window they glow making it look like a ghoul is riding in your back seat. The sight of these things might get you a ticket in China. Evidently,

It’s not a pitch. Those who want to see it will see it. Those who don’t will likely see it anyway. Many will love it. Some won’t. It’s the way it goes anytime

Well hello there my Little Monsters…I’m so glad you’ve decided to join me. Recently I returned to my humble abode to find a box sitting on the front porch – a box I had been eagerly awaiting.
