Comic Book Review: Attaboy (2021)

Artist extraordinaire Tony McMillen (creator of the horror effects biz/coming of age tale Serious Creatures that every, single one of you monster mother fuckers need on your beastly bookshelves right away) is getting ready to launch a Kickstarter campaign to get his latest creation, the ’80s video game influenced Attaboy in your hairy lil’ hands, and he just so happened to grant yours cruelly an advanced look-see at his tale of advanced robots and the perils of fatherhood… Presented in an over-sized “treasury” format, Attaboy relates the tale of the eponymous robot boy; the creation of a kindly scientist and a soon-to-turn rogue Motherboard, who must stand against a fleet of mechanical menaces. It’s also about exploring the existence of a game that might be completely hallucinatory (even the name of the games supposed creators, Alucinari offers credence to this)… and I haven’t gotten to the juicy part yet cats n’ creeps! At it’s center, Attaboy is a story of

Blu-ray Review: The Last Starfighter (1984)

Our man Alex Rogan (Lance Guest) has got it tough all over; he longs to leave the small trailer park he calls home and stay true to his sweetheart, Maggie (Catherine Mary Stewart)… but the one-two punch of the local yokels on his ass 24/7, and being recruited to fight in an intergalactic battle against evil aliens is putting a serious dent in those plans, let me tell ya cats n’ creeps! How did Alex get the honor of becoming a real, live space cadet? Well, he’s really good at playing a video game that just so happens to be a test put in place by an alien conman named Centauri (legendary theater and film thespian Robert Preston) to find suckers that are willing to defend the galaxy from big-domed scenery chewing super villain Xur (a deliciously over-the-top performance from Norman Snow) and his leather-faced alien chums, who just so happen to own a meteor gun that launches those pains-in-the-asteroids

Blu-ray Review: Max Cloud (2020)

Video game wizard, and ultra-’90s teen Sarah (Isabelle Allen) is totally into the video game The Intergalactic Adventures of Max Cloud, so imagine her fuckin’ surprise when she is zapped into said game courtesy of one of it’s characters, The Space Witch (Jason Maza) where she takes up residence in the body of the ship’s chef, Jake (Elliot James Langridge). Now she must help Max (Scott Adkins) and Commander Rexy (Sally Collett) eliminate the threat of the outlandishly evil Revengor (John Hannah in a delightfully over-the-top role) and his henchwoman Shee (Lashana Lynch) and get back to Brooklyn circa 1990. Max Cloud is nothing if not imaginative, and co-writer (along with Collett)/director Martin Owen manages to squeeze every bit of production value out of the production with some fun and clever choices. The sets are colorful and fun (if limited), the actors all incredibly game (and actually funny… a true plus for a comedy, right cats n’ creeps?), the miniatures

Movie Review: Max Reload and the Nether Blasters (2020)

Max Jenkins (Tom Plumley) and his pals Reggie (Joey Morgan) and Liz (Hassie Harrison) spend most of their time, free and otherwise, playin’ a Warcraft-esque MMORPG, but those fabricated adventures are about to become all to real… You see, Max works at a video game store… in fact all of his pals do; and it’s within those confines that our hero discovers a long lost Colecovision game, Nether Dungeon by name, that when conquered unleashes an ancient curse upon the small town our protagonists call home. Soon Max, Reggie, and Liz must face the Nether, along with the help of one of the game’s creators, Eugene Wylder (Greg Grunberg), and their level of success will determine the fate of the entire world! One of the greatest assets to Max Reload and the Nether Blasters is the mythology the flick conjures up around the fictitious video game that causes so much trouble for Max n’ friends. There’s a brief television documentary

Movie Review: Not For Resale (2020)

Look, I’ll lay it on the line; physical media may soon go the way of the dinosaur, and that is kind of bullshit if you ask your’s cruelly. Anyway, I’m not alone in this… just take a gander at the number of boutique labels providing horror hounds with the titles they crave on Blu-ray these days. Well, ‘lo and behold video game fans have the same fuckin’ desire which brings us to Not for Resale… Not for Resale, the new documentary from Kevin J. James, takes us on a tour of independent video game stores still keeping the lights on by wheeling n’ dealing in the relics of the golden age of physical cartridges and disks that transported us to the realms of our most fantastic dreams… and speaking of dreams, these shops may soon become obsolete thanks to the aging out of the customer base; but damn it if the folks behind these cultural meccas of geekdom won’t give

Bruce Campbell Confirms New ‘Evil Dead’ Game Is Coming

The rumor mill has been going in overtime since Bruce Campbell teased earlier this week that more of the Evil Dead franchise was on its way. Today, we finally know what he was teasing, a new immersive Evil Dead video game! And no, we’re not talking about Dead by Daylight. Last year we interviewed Campbell after retiring from his character Ash Williams, the star of the franchise, and he teased that he was working on a few things he couldn’t go into detail about yet. But he was crystal clear about one thing, Ash is retired. During a recent chat with TV Insider, he talked a little about the new game. We’ll see more Evil Dead, that’s for sure. There is an Evil Dead video game out,” Campbell told the site. “A fully immersive video game probably within a year. I’m not sure about the day. There will be variations of that. There won’t be the original Ash anymore. That

Women Of Horror Month: Melina Juergens, From Video Editor To Award-Winning Actress

Imagine you’re at work one day and by chance, they needed someone to step in and perform a task you were not trained for and you nailed it on your first try. After impressing your coworkers you keep the position and as a result, you won the highest honors for it. This is what happened to Melina Juergens, my personal pick for Women of Horror Month. German-born Melina was working as a video editor for Ninja Theory while they were in the middle of making, what would become, their multi-award-winning video game, Hellbade: Senua’s Sacrifice. When the time came to animate the title character’s movements, Melina stepped in to don the motion capture suit and perform as the game’s heroine Senua, this inadvertently became an audition. Impressing everyone, Melina was now officially playing the title role both voicing and acting out her actions via-motion capture. Adding more to it, her likeness was used for Senua forever cementing her place in

Blu-ray Review: Double Dragon (1994)

In the amazing future year 2007, the villainous businessman/shadow monster Koga Shuko (Robert Patrick, who looks absolutely preposterous and gobbles up scenery like he’s hitting the mac n’ cheese trough at the local Golden Corral) lords over the city of New Angeles. Not for nothing, he has also come in possession of half of a mystical medallion (called the Double Dragon) that when made whole grants it’s owner some of those mystic powers the kids are so into these days. Well, humanity can breathe easy as the other half is in the possession of Satori (Julia Nickson) and her two adopted sons Billy and Jimmy Lee (Scott Wolf and Mark Dacascos)…underground karate tournament fighters and favorite targets for Bo Abobo (Nils Allen Stewart…who seems to be having the time of his life in the role…as does everyone in this thing honestly), leader of the Mohawk Gang and frequent steroid abuser. Soon Shuko kills Satori, tuns Abobo into an outrageous monster,

Top 5 Horror Games Of 2018

2018 was a sad year for horror video games. Many games that were scheduled to be released were pushed back to the upcoming year while some that were supposed to start going into development in ’18 simply never happened. Even some titles that were released slipped through the cracks without even drawing attention, but like most crappy things in life, there’s a silver lining, in this case, five of them. Without further ado and in no particular order, here are my Top 5 Horror Games Of 2018. Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice (Windows, PlayStation 4, Xbox One) This dark fantasy by Ninja Theory has won over 20 awards and enchanted fans with a fusion world of Norse and Celtic cultures. The story follows a Pict warrior woman named Senua as she journeys through the Norse underworld Helheim to rescue her lover who was sacrificed by the Norsemen. The most prominent plot device that helps make this game a success is the fact

‘Call Of Cthulhu’ Pre-Order Now On Sale

Focus Home Interactive is having a massive sale on many of their games for a limited time, October 16th – October 22nd. You can save upwards to 80% on some titles, I highly recommend “Vampyr” as its 50% off for this limited time! For us Lovecraft fans, the highly anticipated role-playing horror game “Call of Cthulhu: The official Video Game” is available for pre-order but for a limited time the price is down 10%, which in hindsight is some decent wiggle room. Don’t worry, the sale is also on for PS4 fans as well. “Call of Cthulhu: The official Video Game” takes players on a journey into madness as they play as a private detective named Edward Pierce who is investigating the mysterious deaths of the members of the Hawkins family and discovers something otherworldly and darker is at play. The game will be out October 30th on all gaming platforms.
