“Women in Horror Spotlight”: Kathryn Bigelow

Odds are that if you are familiar with director/producer/writer Kathryn Bigelow it will be for her Drama/Thriller pieces like K-19: The Widowmaker (2002) starring Harrison Ford and Liam Neeson, or for her outstanding work on The Hurt Locker (2008) for which she was the first woman to win an Academy Award for Best Director, she won the Directors Guild of America Award for Outstanding Directing, she won the BAFTA Award for Best Direction, and she also earned the Critics Choice Award for Best Director. (This is on top of the awards that the film won on its own.) She is also the directorial force behind the recent blockbuster, Zero Dark Thirty (2012). The reason why Bigelow has earned a nod here is due to a western horror film she wrote and directed in 1987 towards the beginning of her career. The film was called New Dark and was about a small town farmer’s son who is turned into a vampire

“Women In Horror Month” Spotlight: Ana Lily Amirpour

Ana Lily Amirpour may not be a name you are familiar with due to the freshness of her career, but she is sure to be a household name in horror if she continues at her current rate! Amirpour is an Iranian-American film director, screenwriter, producer and actor who is currently most widely known for her feature film debut, A Girl Walks Home at Night. The movie is based on a previous short film she wrote and directed of the same title, and she describes it as an “Iranian Vampire Spaghetti Western” – intrigued yet? The movie premiered at Sundance Film Festival in 2014 and is set to be distributed by VICE Films. She has described her next film as: “a post-apocalyptic cannibal love story set in a Texas wasteland” where a “muscled cannibal breaks the rule ‘don’t play with your food”” She’s certainly a creative force to watch!

The movie delves into the beginning of Dracula’s story, when he was a man trying to protect his family and people against the Turks that he knows will invade. He refuses to meet their demands of one thousand boys as tribute for their army, when at the last moment of the meeting Mehmed also demands Vlad’s son to take to raise. Vlad has lived a peaceful life for ten years but the legendary fighter will never allow the Turks to take the boys or his son. Vlad must make a choice between losing it all or becoming a monster. Luke Evans (Immortals) stars as Vlad/Dracula. Evans is a good fit for the role of immortal badass. The role of Vlad’s wife Mirena is played by the beautiful Sarah Gadon (Enemy). Here are a few of the best horror-comedies out there, movies that every horror fan should see. Wolf Cop (2014) Half wolf. Half cop. He’s Wolf Cop. Tucker and Dale vs. Evil (2010) Two buddies head to their new vacation home ( a cabin in the woods). On their way they meet a group of collage students, who are less than friendly. When one of the ladies are injured they take her back to the cabin. The students assume the worse and set out to attack Tucker and Dale to retrieve their friend and chaos ensues. I can not say this enough, I love this movie! Shaun Of The Dead (2004) When the zombie apocalypse hits two friends are on a mission to rescue Shaun’s ex girlfriend and his mom. Scary Movie
