The new world of Universal monsters is continuing to expand. Recently reported on their upcoming film Renfield, starring Nicholas Cage as Dracula. Now, news has come (via Deadline) that the genre classic Phantom of the Opera is also getting a new adaptation that is simply titled Phantom. In the story, “a young soprano becomes the obsession of a disfigured and murderous musical genius who lives beneath the Paris Opéra House.” We can expect a killer soundtrack with eight-time Grammy-winner John Legend producing the modern day set musical along with his Get Lifted Film partner Mike Jackson. The Phantom of the Opera gets another remake…this one will be different though. The original story was written in 1909 by French author Gaston Leroux, but that story has been overtaken by Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Broadway play to the point where it has become the story that everyone knows. Anthony Horowitz wants to change that and promises that his re-imagined 6-part mini-series will be much more true to the original novel. I personally have always loved the story and absolutely immersed myself in everything to to with the Phantom when I was younger so this is amazing news! I am very excited to see what Horowitz will do with the freedom of a mini-series.

Holy hell creeps; here comes the monstrous mother-load…thirty classic Universal released fright flicks all in one handy-dandy Blu-ray collection! Let’s take a very, very deep dive into the Universal Classic Monsters: Complete 30-Film Collection as we feast our eerie eyeballs on every film and the eerie extras these devilish discs contain! (Fair warning: this is going to be one hell of an insanely long-ass review!!!) Kicking things of we have the Frankenstein Complete Legacy Collection Frankenstein (1931): Ol’ Doc Henry Frankenstein (Colin Clive) and his deformed assistant Fritz (Dwight Frye) are up to the totally reasonable and completely sane task of digging up graves and disassembling corpses with the intent of putting the best bits together like a human jigsaw puzzle. Well, thanks to janky science and lightning they succeed, but the end result isn’t the human perfection for which they strove; rather he is a misshapen monstrosity (played to putrid perfection by Boris Karloff) possessed of great strength,a child

I am more than thrilled to be able to announce that Universal Studios has added more titles to their upcoming ‘Dark Universe’ collection. Through my life I have always been drawn to the truly tragic characters in horror…the monsters who were almost forced to become that way due to their situation – or were simply misunderstood. The top three on my monster/villain list are Frankenstein’s Monster, Quasimodo, and The Phantom of the Opera. In fact, I drew so many pictures and read so many stories about these three tragic characters that my parents legitimately started to worry. We already know that Javier Barden will be playing Frankenstein’s Monster, but I cannot hide my excitement at the announcement of ‘The Hunchback of Notre Dame’ and ‘The Phantom of the Opera’ being added to the ground-breaking collection of redone horror films. Both have been played to perfection by the legendary Lon Chaney and his silent performances will be tough to beat, but
