Movie Review: ‘The Babysitter: Killer Queen’ Is A Frighteningly Funny Flick

There are few genres I love as much as horror, but horror-comedies are right up there on the list. When you can find one of those rare films that can both scare you and make you laugh, you’re in for a treat! Two years ago we were left overjoyed with Netflix The Babysitter, so when Netflix announced the sequel, The Babysitter: Killer Queen, I was beyond excited. Now, that bad boy is about, and let me tell you, it does not disappoint! Judah Lewis returns as the quick-witted Cole, this time around he doesn’t just have a cult to deal with, everyone thinks he made up the events from the first movie. If that’s not enough, there’s also the regular high school drama. The poor kid can’t catch a break. Lewis has acting talent beyond his years and pulls off the character to the “T”. The combo of goofy, sweet, and slightly badass is perfect for this character. He’s relatable

Movie Review: Immortal (2020)

What would you do if you found you were immortal? That’s the premise of the horror anthology Immortal. Featuring four segments directed by Tom Colley, Jon Dabach, Danny Isaac, and Rob Margolies, Immortal reveals twisted tales of people discovering that they can’t be killed. In the first segment, we meet a teacher (Dylan Baker) who lives a double life, during his day job as a teacher he’s kind, supportive, and caring. But after the last bell rings, he enjoys his hobby, hunting humans. He’s met his match with his latest victim (Lindsay Mushett), one of his students, who isn’t so easy to kill. This is my favorite segment. Dylan Baker never disappoints. Aside from the horror aspect, Baker delivers a ton of dark humor and an interesting character. This tale also features the most action. The next installment involves a man who is ready to die in a staged accident to guarantee that his wife and baby have a better

Movie Review: Train To Busan: Peninsula

I just watched Peninsula, the sequel to the worldwide 2016 hit zombie movie Train to Busan. I’m going to be honest, I loved Train to Busan, so I had high hopes for Train to Busan Presents: Peninsula. What did I think? Read on to find out. Heads up, there will be some spoilers. The film picks up four years after the zombie apocalypse. We meet a completely new group of survivors, including a soldier whose family was wiped out, except for his brother in law. The two get a gig from a rich guy to go back to the peninsula along with a small group of survivors on a mission to retrieve a truckload of money. Of course, nothing goes as planned. The main message of the movie is to remind the audience to be better people as well as the importance of family. There’s also the topic of redemption. First off, the young teenage character drives like she’s watched

Blu-ray Review: The Wretched (2019)

Ol’ Ben (John-Paul Howard) is travelling the bumpy-ass road of adolescence and seemingly hitting every pothole; to wit: his parents are separated, he has no wheels, and he’s busting ass working a lame job at the local marina… oh, and he has to deal with being the only one that knows some ancient evil or other (specifically the kind of wicked witch that crawls full-born from the carcass of a deer… as is usually the case, amirite?) has gotten it’s hooks into the metal A.F., MILF, next door neighbor Abbie (Zarah Mahler)… putting her family, and everyone else truth be told, in preternatural peril! Look dude, we’ve all seen this one before; you get the “kid” no one believes witnessing someone being turned evil (whether it’s aliens, demons, witches… that’s all ghoulish gravy baby), yet no one swallows the seemingly insane yarn… which of course turns out to be terrifyingly true… but I’ll be damned if The Wretched (or more

Blu-Ray Review: The Outsider: The Complete First Season

Warner Bros. is set to release the complete first season of the amazing, intense series “The Outsider” on home video tomorrow. Inspired by Stephen King’s best-selling novel, the ten-episode first season takes us on what law enforcement thinks is a straight forward investigation of the brutal murder of a young boy whose body is found in the Georgia woods. Police detective Ralph Anderson (Ben Mendelsohn) believes a local teacher, Terry Maitland (Jason Bateman) is the killer, after all that’s who the evidence points to. Or does it? What he doesn’t know it that a dark, ancient entity is at work. Cynthia Erivo, Marie Winningham, Marc Menchaca, Julianne Nicholson, Paddy Considine, Yul Vazquez, also star, each playing their part to perfection with Mendelsohn and Cynthia Erivo giving standout performances. Anderson is an officer that seems detached for everything around him due to the death of his son. He’s a skeptic of the supernatural world through and through, but he’s desperate to

Movie Review: Deep Blue Sea 3 (2020)

Too often, the shark movies we get are campy and shallow with no real message or facts. That’s where Deep Blue Sea 3 is different. With a more serious tone, the movie is filled with real facts and the message that we need to protect these amazing creatures. I truly appreciate that director John Pogue and writer Dirk Blackman took this approach. Don’t get me wrong, there are brief moments of cheesiness, but for the most part, this is a story about determination and survival. So if you’re looking for something like Sharknado, just keep swimming. In the film, a team of researches, led by the headstrong, passionate Dr. Emma Collins, are based on an artificial island. As they study the reef and shark nursery, a past lover of Dr. Collins arrives on a ship in hopes that she will help him find three sharks that have escaped a secret lab. Not knowing the entire story, the team joins the

Movie Review: Amulet

Every once in a while, I come across a movie the leaves me speechless. As I sat down today to watch Amulet I thought I had some idea of what to expect. I was wrong. Where to start? I guess the premise would be a good place. Amulet is the debut feature from Romola Garai and follows Tomas (Alec Secareanu), a homeless ex-soldier, suffering from PTSD and heavy guilt. He meets a nun who arranges a place for him to stay, with a young woman (Carla Juri) whose mother is sick and living in the attic. But not everything is what as it seems to be. Normally, I do my best to avoid giving out spoilers, but to work through this film, I need to reveal a few things. To avoid spoilers stop reading this review now. The first half of the movie is a SLOW burn. But at the halfway mark things go off the rails and morphs into

Movie Review: Ghosts Of War (2020)

The moment I saw the trailer for writer-director Eric Bress’ Ghosts of War I knew that I HAD to see it. Not only is it a horror movie, but it’s also a war movie, two things I’m a sucker for. Are you tired of the same old overly hyped horror movie that promises to be “one of the best movies of the year” only to be a total let a down? Well, that’s not the case with Ghosts of War. It actually is that good. Ghosts of War opens with a haunting quote. This war will not end. With every mile my body and spirit break. Every jolt makes brittle my mind. Each step pulls me further from homeuntil I am the shell of the man that kissed my mother goodbye a forever ago. And I tense endlessly. Not knowing which will arrive first, the bullet that takes my life or my final chance for redemption. – Private First Class

Movie Review: ‘Relic’ Tackles The Horrors Of Dementia In Unique, Terrifying Way

Normally, when I review a movie I try not to give away too many spoilers. This time, I feel like it’s necessary to do the movie justice. Consider this a warning. Directed by Natalie Erika James who co-wrote the film with Christian White, Relic‘s official synopsis reads as: “A daughter, mother, and grandmother are haunted by a manifestation of dementia that consumes their family home.” The synopsis does not do the film justice. Yes, Relic is a horror movie, but it is also so much more. It is a commentary about the horrors of dementia and the terrifying process of a loved one losing themselves and becoming a husk of who they once were, as well as the toll the disease takes on the entire family. Imagine slowly losing who you are, losing your memories and there’s nothing anyone can do to stop it. That’s scarier than anything any film could really capture, but somehow Relic comes close. The entire

Movie Review: ‘Two Heads Creek’ Is Horror Comedy Done Right

When I sat down to watch writer-director Jesse O’Brien’s Two Heads Creek I didn’t know what to really expect. The sad truth is that horror-comedies rarely live up to expectations or their PR campaigns. However, Two Heads Creek is a rare exception. The UK/Aussie film is about a brother and sister who discover that they were adopted after their mother’s death. It was no surprise that they set out to find the mother who gave them up. What they don’t know is how just how twisted their family really is. Two Heads Creek is a mix of blood-drenched action and dark humor. It’s wickedly funny and delightfully demented. This fun flick is a bit campy from beginning to end but in the best possible way! Looking for blood and gore? Two Heads Creek has it, my god does it ever! Jordan Waller and Kathryn Wilder star as the siblings who head to a tiny outback town looking for dear old
