Maria (The Last Exorcism‘s Ashley Bell) and Jules (Noureen DeWulf) are a couple checking in to a swanky vacation rental, so ol’ J-dawg can get her rest on. It doesn’t take but a fraction of a millipube (it’s a real measurement of time, but only us cool ass movie critics know about it… wait, now I’ve told you about it… ) for things to go from sedate to escape room style fight for survival, as AirBnB type sitches oft do, eh me boils n’ ghouls? Let me tell you cats n’ creeps; Dear Guest is one hell of a sinister short! Writer/director Megan Freels Johnston delivers a fantastic mystery; replete with cryptic clues delivered on lil’ white cards, a house that is impossible to escape, and a fine sense of escalating tension… all delivered as we scratch our horrible heads trying to figure out who is behind it all. Following its premiere at the Monaco International Film Festival, a new teaser has arrived for Dear Guest, a Twilight Zone-esque short film. In the film, “a couple checks into a vacation rental, only to find that the anonymous host likes to play games on its guests. ” The throwback short film stars Ashley Bell (The Last Exorcism) and Noureen DeWulf (Good Girls) as a couple who soon regrets renting this picturesque home for their long-awaited vacation. Megan Freels Johnston (interview), best known for her suburban nightmare The Ice Cream Truck and her break up film noir Rebound directed the short film between feature projects. With all the makings of a modern-day Hitchcock film, Dear Guest will play the festival circuit for all of 2020. Johnston though has alluded that this short could evolve into a feature. Dear Guest was produced by Freels Johnston, Michael May (Auto/Biography), and Bill Whirity (Prey). Check out the new teaser trailer.

Horror Fuel: “Where did you find the inspiration for your film The Ice Cream Truck?” Megan Freels Johnston: “I lived in a neighborhood that happens to have a lot of ice cream trucks and I had just moved there. What struck me about those ice cream trucks was that they were actually selling the whole ice cream cones and banana splits. When I grew up they just sold wrapped up ice cream bars. It seemed so old-fashioned to me. I had just had my second child and I was home with the baby. I kept hearing the trucks go by with the music. It occurred to me

It’s not always true that you can never go home again. In fact, Mary, her husband and their two children are all relocating to the suburbs of Mary’s hometown. Mary arrives at their new home first, while her husband and kids wrap up things back in Seattle before coming out to join her. Left on her own to face the suburban monotony, Mary makes an earnest attempt to play nice with local suburbanites. Existing in the suburbs is not what it used to be and is definitely not for the faint of heart, and for Mary it’s the equivalent of fitting a square peg in a round hole. But complacency can be a dangerous thing in the ‘burbs, especially when some dangers are hidden behind a seemingly innocent facade. Megan Freels Johnston was at the helm for this film, which she also wrote the screenplay for. The vilification of those summertime purveyors of frozen treats and novelties is nothing new.
