Horror Icon Kane Hodder Joins Witchula

Back in July, MAB Studios officially announced their co-production with the British indie production company Silent Studios for Marcus Bradford’s Witchula, co-wrote and co-directed by Pat Kusnadi (The Id, Down With David). This morning it was announced that genre icon Kane Hodder has signed on as Witchula’s stunt coordinator and will play the role of Elias Lou Warren. Hodder has appeared in over 131 films and series and has played the iconic role of Jason Voorhees four times. Hodder plays the deformed killer in the Hatchet franchise. The Road to Death House Pt. 3

“Please don’t let this be full of jump scares like The Conjuring movies.” “I hope this is smart and actually has a story.” “I don’t expect much from this. It’ll likely suck. Just accept it.” “Stupid title. Stupid premise. Nothing to see here, folks.” “This will suck.” “I have hopes for this.” “Based on the cast of old stars [that] they have, I don’t see this being any good.” Internet comments. Most of them from “trolls.” Trolls are people I sum up by asking a simple question: “And where is the movie you made?” Oh…that’s right. I believe there can be too much democracy. The Internet has given a voice to groups of people that should not have one. I’ve posted my thoughts on a filmmaker’s response to uneducated critics here: https://horrorfuel.com/horror/movies/zombie-movies/when-filmmakers-strike-back/ So let’s talk about what Death House will be–not conjecture or ignorant shade cast by anonymous little people who are too afraid to commit themselves to making something.

Road to Death House Part 2

I’ve attended a lot of Hollywood meetings. Creative. Business. Social. In every one of these, ideas and projects get thrown around. People get excited. Plans are made. I usually wait until the very end to ask the most important question. If it is not mentioned up front, you kind of have your answer, but it’s a game in the end to see if you’re as smart as you think you are. That question is: Is the financing in place? You get either leaden silence as if you committed some grave social faux pas, or you get the “well, we are talking to so and so…” Translated: there is no money. Don’t believe the Hollywood fables of making a film for $15,000 and making $400 million. With all legends there is a grain of truth, but like an oyster makes a pearl, it’s slathered with layers of mucus and shit. No, your $7000 movie is not going to make a million.

Spoon Fed Horror

Expect more from your entertainment. Don’t be spoon fed. Whether film, literature, music, even video gaming…refuse to be dumbed down. As I move over the half way point in post production for “Death House” I’ve had time to reflect on the film and wonder how it will be received. The latest news on yet another “Friday the 13th” installment is it will be an origins story. I guess my question is…was there ever that much there in the first place to warrant an origin backstory? Doesn’t it defeat the point of making a simple slasher film to entertain, scare and titillate? Do we really need an origins story whether on Pamela Vorhees or Jason or how Camp Crystal Lake was founded? The Millennial Generation and after are said to be too literal. They need everything spelled out for them. They have all the information they need on their phones. Why think? Why extrapolate? Hell, why even dream? School is taught

The Road to Death House Part 1

Let’s build on Eli Roth’s prescient observation. I have written quite a bit on cynicism in filmmaking. If you are just coming to my series, stop here. Go back and read my other pieces. Then you can read this in context. However, he is talking about a SMALL percentage of fans. This is not a general description at all. We prefer to focus on the majority of horror fans that do the opposite of Roth’s comments. I have provided an open door, a very wide door, into the production of a movie since “Death House” started filming. “Death House” is my fifth feature film: the fifth I have written and the third I have directed. It’s been a long road, and frankly, I am doing what no one else is doing in Hollywood, making consistent, high quality product on very low budgets. I’ve made one film a year since doing this profession full time. “Death House” was brought to me

The film has a cast so impressive it makes you feel as if your head is going to explode. And no, there is no Freddy vs Jason scenes or anything like that. The stars play new characters from an original story created by Gunnar Hansen, the actor who played Leatherface in the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and written and directed by Smith.
