Blu-ray Review: An Angel for Satan (1966)

The Count of Montebruno (Claudio Gora), is gettin’ his palatial pad, located in a tiny Italian lakeside village, all nice n’ tidy because his gorgeous niece Harriet (Euro-horror mainstay Barbara Steele) is a-comin’ to town! While getting his Mister Clean on, the count discovers a forgotten antique statue… a statue that just so happens to look exactly like Harriet. Speaking of ol’ H; she begins holding sway with the other inhabitants of the household, all while the bodies keep piling up around town… which the inhabitants are sure are related to a curse associated with that arcane artwork. What secret does that seemingly idle idol possess and how does it relate to Harriet? Directed and co-written by Camillo Mastrocinque (along with Giuseppe Mangione), An Angel for Satan is a Gothic thriller absolutely packed with everything that makes that genre so damn spellbinding! We get the old, dark mansion located in secluded environs, a fair young woman in residence… walking among

4K-UHD Review: Cat O’ Nine Tails (1971)

Blind crossword puzzle author (is that what people who create those things are even called???) Franco (Karl Malden, proving he walked the streets of Rome before those of San Francisco) is taking a stroll one night with his young niece Lori (Cinzia De Carolis) when he overhears a plan to blackmail a scientist who works at a top secret genetic institute…well, not too top secret if they are blabbing about it right out in the damn street and all…oh, and there’s a robbery in there somewhere as well. Anyway Franco eventually teams up with a journalist by the name of Carlo (everyone’s favorite ‘not-quite-Charlton Heston’ James Franciscus) to solve the case, but there ends up being a metric shit-ton of the ol’ murder biz about, so these two dudes are most likely in way over their heads… Admittedly, I’ve never been the biggest fan of the giallo genre; they’ve always played out more like a typical murder mystery with a

Italian Witch Series “Luna Nera” Will Soon Cast Its Spell On Netflix

Netflix has revealed that its third Italian original will premiere in just a few days. Titled “Luna Nera” (Black Moon), the series is rooted in history and centers on a group of Italian women accused of witchcraft in the 17th century. “Luna Nera” marks the first Italian series entirely written and directed by women, which should give it a unique perspective. Set in the Roman countryside during the Inquisition as well as the scientific revolution, the six-episode series is based on “Luna Nera”, a series of books written by Tiziana Triana that draws inspiration from real 17th-century witch hunts, trials, and executions. At the center of the series is Ade, a 16-year-old midwife who is accused of witchcraft following the death of a newborn. She flees into the forest where she finds refuge with a family of witches. Blu-ray Review: Anthropophagous (1980)/Absurd (1981)

After wandering through a small village in Greece (accompanied by one hell of a raunchy score), two German tourists arrive on a beach and get them selves all murdered up by something that comes out of the ocean. Speaking of tourists, five pals and their new acquaintance Julie (Tisa Farrow) plan on touring the islands. They hop on a boat, drink some Cokes, play some guitar, and ignore ominous Tarot card warnings…as one does. Soon most of the gang (minus the outrageously pregnant Maggie…seriously, she may be in the 5th trimester) go exploring the town…a town which is nearly deserted save for a strange woman in black and a cannibalized corpse here and there. Things aren’t going to well back at the boat either as Maggie is abducted, and the boat is set adrift stranding the group on the island where they shelter in a seemingly empty house. Soon they learn that a foul smelling, diseased, beast of a man
