Movie Review: Impetigore (2019)

Toll booth workers Maya (Tara Basro) and Dini (Marissa Anita) spend their shifts shootin’ the shit with each other via their cellphones, but that normalcy is shattered when a mystery man keeps givin’ Maya static before being shot dead by security after delivering a a bit of “doom-saying” that hints at our heroine having a dark family secret. After some investigation, Maya, with Dini in tow, believes she was born to a rich family, and to that end treks to a remote village in the hopes of inheriting the family’s home. Instead she finds out she’s inherited the hatred of the local villagers that believe her family has brought a curse to the village that condemns children to be born without skin… and the locals want Maya dead! Indonesian writer/director Joko Anwar (most known for his update of Putra’s 1980 cult classic Satan’s Slaves) once again delivers a disturbing yet slickly-produced fright flick with Impetigore; a deft blend of rural

Blu-ray Review: Satan’s Slave (1982)

So the basics of Satan’s Slave are as follows: Mawarti (Diana Suarkom) kicks the bucket leaving behind her son Tomi (Fachrul Rozy), her daughter Rita (Siska Widowati), and her asthmatic servant Mr. Karto (I.M. Damsyik)… as well as her business obsessed hubby Munarto (W.D. Mochtar). That’s all fine and dandy, if a touch sad, but what really kicks things off is that Tomi keeps seeing mommy dearest walkin’ around in ghost form, which leads to a visit to the local fortune teller who explains he needs to get some black magic in his life fuckin’ pronto if he wants to survive the supernatural shenanigans to come. As if on cue the new housekeeper, Darminah (Ruth Pelupessy), arrives on the scene and man-o-man is she ever one shady character. Before long folks start dyin’, the dead rise and walk the earth, and our heroes are going to need every arcane art and holy text offered to them to survive the outre

Movie Review: Satan’s Slaves (2017)

Pengabdi Setan, or Satan’s Slaves (the title of both this film and the original 1982 film upon which it is based) concerns a cash strapped Indonesian family who suffers the loss of the matriarch of the clan. Upon her death, the family is left with a lingering debt due in part to having had to pay out the ass for medicine for her preternatural (and mega-creepy) illness. To alleviate that financial burden, Daddy Dearest heads off to the city to find a way to make money leaving his four children home alone. It doesn’t take long before shit hits the frightful fan six ways to Sunday as soon the children’s mother’s ghost begins appearing in ever more frightful ways…and her pact with a Satanic cult to allow her to bear children (she was barren up to that point ‘natch) is revealed. Can our young heroes survive the supernatural’s invasion into their lives (including the aforementioned cult and ghosts, as well
