DVD Review: Dead Ant (2017)

’80s hair metal band Sonic Grave are trying to get back in the game in the current age , and they are on the road to a hip music festival where they hope to attract new fans at the behest of their manager Danny (Tom Arnold). Along the way, bassist Art (Sean Astin) makes a pit stop for some legendary power-packed peyote… a drug that comes with a curse attached; if anything on the sacred land is harmed while on the drug a horrible fate will befall those responsible. I forgot to mention; Art isn’t the brightest dude out there, and neither are his band mates Merrick (Jake Busey), Stevie (Leisha Hailey), and Pager (Rhys Coiro) for that matter, and soon a talking ant is pissed on and a deadly evil is released which results in our heroes getting their creature-feature cherries popped by Hymenoptera from hell! DVD Review: Matriarch (2018)

Rachel (Charlie Blackwood) and Matt Hopkins (Scott Vickers, who also wrote and directed the film) becoming stranded in the Scottish countryside after havin’ a slow speed run-in with a rando tree. Soon our heroes find themselves at a secluded farm owned by Bob and Agnes Fairbairn (Alan Cuthbert and Julie Hannan respectively) who offer them shelter for the night while being mega-creepy infatuated with Rachel’s pregnancy. Speaking of “mega-creepy”, Rachel and Matt discover that the Fairbairn’s daughter Faith (Briony Monroe) is actually Ellie Adams, a child that went missing years before…in fact all of the family’s children once belonged to someone else…and now they want Rachel’s unborn son to add to their unholy brood! Matriarch took me by surprise…I expected some sort of uncomfortable, pregnancy based torture porn affair, but instead I got a flick balls deep in atmosphere, tone, and world building…though the “uncomfortable” element does come into play…but more on that in a bit. Set among rolling pastoral

DVD Review: All the Creatures Were Stirring (2018)

An awkward couple arrive at a playhouse presenting a series of vignettes, named after phrases from ‘The Night Before Christmas‘, and based on varying elements of the Christmas spirit (and hosted by a silent master of ceremonies portrayed by genre mainstay Maria Olsen). Thus begins the latest arcane anthology from our beloved horror biz titled All the Creatures Were Stirring. The first story up is called ‘The Stockings Were Hung‘, and concerns an office Holiday party where the gift exchange goes hideously awry as an unwanted participant turns the game into a murder packed fight for survival! This was a tale equal parts humorous and grim and a very strong start to the ho ho horror at hand. Next we have ‘Dash Away All‘ which presents the terror tale of a man trying to get home for Christmas. Things become complicated when he locks his keys in his car and seeks help from two mysterious women in a van…a van

DVD Review: Snake Outta Compton (2018)

A snake falls from a plane over Compton and while it doesn’t survive the trip; it’s egg does and is retrieved by an uber-nerd, oh-so-subtly named Vurkel (Donte Essien), who subjects the newly hatched infant snake to experiments with a growth ray (which he intended to use on his cock) that causes it to grow uncontrollably (what else did you expect it to do dumbass). Meanwhile Vurkel’s roommates are an amateur hip hop crew that unfortunately have fallen afoul of an absolutely ridiculous criminal named Alley Jaws (Eric Paul Erickson) to whom they owe a considerable sum. Soon that snake gets free and goes on a rampage while our heroes make inept attempts to get the money owed to Jaws while dealing with the constant interference of testosterone infused crooked cop Denz (Joston Theney) and his completely idiotic rookie partner Ethan (Jon Kondelik) who arrest the group’s MC Cam (Ricky Flowers Jr.) and generally make life miserable for our protagonists.

DVD Review: Followers (2017)

Two amazingly perfect social media fitness-centric “celebrities” head out into the deep woods for a lil’ R&R (which they plan to record every minute of…which is a needed conceit seeing as how this is a found footage fright flick and all). But there is more to this yarn, as two online documentary film makers who want to prove how easy it is to track someone on social media and find them no matter where they are, follow our couple into those aforementioned woods…but just what do they plan on doing to them once they are found? While on the surface Followers may not appear to be the most original horror picture you could ever see (especially blending found footage and stalk n’ slay elements), but it has some clever use of social media elements (including a Facetime cold open murder to start things off), and Actors Amanda Delaney and Justin Maina as our comely protagonists do a really solid job

Extraterrestrials Invade VOD In ‘Alien: Reign Of Man’

Though not the xenomorphs created by legendary artist H.R. Giger and made famous by director Ridley Scott, Uncork’d Entertainment’s Alien: Reign of Man will bring us face-to-face with a new breed of hostile space-creeps. Alien: Reign of Man spins the tale of some sort of team working to activate some sort of machine to save Earth, while stranded on some planet, battling the titular aliens. From what I’ve seen in the trailer, the film appears to be an indie mockbuster somewhere in between Alien: Covenant and Interstellar. Directed by Justin Price (Dark Moon Rising), and starring Deanna Grace Congo, Torrei Hart, Khu, and Cameron White, the low-budget sci-fi horror comes to VOD August 1, with a DVD release slated for November 14, 2017. Though I’ve yet to see the film, I’m highly skeptical of its quality. Judge for yourself by watching the official trailer of Alien: Reign of Man below.

Starring Michael Madsen (Reservoir Dogs, Species), Linda Bella (Monsters in the Woods), and Madi Vodane, Devil’s Domain tells the harrowing tale of Lisa (Vodane), a victim of cyber-bullying who, fed up with her tormentors, strikes a deal with with the Devil. The situation escalates as quickly as the film’s body count, with the fate of the entire world resting upon the deal the Devil has made with young Lisa. According to writer/director Jared Cohn, the film “is a story about the ramifications of social media, cyber-bullying and how it affects the youth of today.” Aside from a solid cast and premise that hits close to home with today’s youth, Devil’s Domain features a first-rate soundtrack including the likes of Iggy Pop, Onyx, DMX, and others. As the film’s
