Blu-ray Review: Dracula (1979)

Looking for a faithful adaptation of Bram Stoker’s masterpiece, Dracula? Well, it’s a hardy “tough shit” to you, because today we are turning our putrid peepers on John Badham’s 1979 version of that beloved terror tale! Beginning with Drac-attac’s arrival in jolly ol’ eerie England aboard the doomed ship The Demeter, this version skips that whole “journey to a foreboding castle” bag the yarn usually kicks off with. Anyhow, frail Mina van Helsing (Jan Francis… and see what I mean about “faithful”?) finds Drac’s (Frank Langella) limp form while calling on her friend Lucy Seward (Kate Nelligan… and again…), who’s pappy Dr. Jack Seward (Donald Pleasence) runs Ye Olde Local Loony Bin located within his stately clifftop mansion. Now Drac manages to fool everyone with his smooth as silk ways… but before long Mina is dead at the fangs of the that creepy count who strikes while Lucy is gallivanting about with her beau Jonathon (Trevor Eve). This results in

André Øverdal To Helm Dracula Tale ‘The Last Voyage of the Demeter’

Bragi Schut‘s script, The Last Voyage of the Demeter, has been passed around for years. There have been multiple directors attached however, the film never comes to life, but that may be about to change. THR reported today that The Autopsy of Jane Doe and Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark director André Øverdal is currently in talks to helm the film for Amblin. Demeter was the name of the ship that brought Dracula from Transylvania to London in Bram Stoker’s classic Dracula. In the 1897 novel, the Demeter washes up on the English shore, “tattered and broken, with one mad survivor.” The script, written in 2002 by Schut (Season of the Witch) tells the tale of that journey and the crew that was slaughtered one by one by its mysterious passenger. Bradley Fischer, Arnold Messer, and Mike Medavoy are set to produce the film.

Blu-ray Review: Dracula A.D. 1972 (1972) and The Satanic Rites of Dracula (1973)

Warner Brothers have just unleashed a real terror treat for fang bangers everywhere; a duo of discs starring that demonic Dracula and his vampire hordes courtesy of the haunted Hammer House of Horror! So let’s grab a slice or two of extra garlic pizza and give Dracula A.D. 1972 and The Satanic Rites of Dracula a wicked whirl! Dracula A.D. 1972 begins with Dracula (Christopher Lee) dying at the hands (spokes?) of a wagon wheel in the 1800’s (trust me, it plays out waaay better than it reads). Flash forward to ultra-mod London in the year 1972 where hip scenster cum Occultist Johnny Alucard (Christopher Neame) gets the shit-hot idea to perform a ritual with his chums in a deconsecrated church in the hopes of giving rise to the Devil himself, but he instead conjurs up ol’ Drac-Attack! What Johnny doesn’t know however is that his pal Jessica (Stephanie Beacham) and her grandfather Lorrimer (Peter Cushing) are part of a

Movie Review: Queen Dracula (2017)

The long and short of Queen Dracula goes as follows: in a modern day twist on Bram Stoker’s classic, widower Jonathan Harker (Danny Zanelotti) travels to Transylvania and becomes under the spell of Queen Dracula…and imagine the surprise of Jon-boy’s daughters Lucy (Emily Miller) and Mina (Abigail G. Holmes) when they meet their potential new step-mother “D”; a real fang banger that’s out to put the bite on anyone that stands in her way! I’m not going to mince words…Queen Dracula is one of the most amateur productions I have put my eerie eyeballs on in a damn sight. Filmed on…I don’t rightly know…but I will tell you it has zero cinematography, lighting, professional (or in some cases even competent) acting or special effects (though Q.D.’s contact lenses are cool), this film is absolutely the equivalent of the S.O.V. material you would find on video store shelves in the late 1980’s…and you know what; fucking kudos to Writer/Director Curtis Everitt
