Blu-ray Review: A Slaughter in Plague Town (2008)

A bickering family of American tourists decide to stop off in a small Irish village located in a picturesque, verdant landscape. Seems prosaic enough, but as horror movies oft times go; this village has a deep, dark (in this case mutant) based secret that will put that vacay in a serious dovetail right quick! As you may surmise from that sinister synopsis, Plague Town (or A Slaughter in Plague Town) is a fright flick positively dripping with atmosphere. This is nowhere as evident in the locales utilized to bring this terror tale to life; all wicked woods and dark, almost monotone environs. It’s drab, it’s dreary, and it looks exactly like the place you’d run into some good ol’ folk horror madness! Adding to the positives are the lean n’ mean flow of the film delivered by co-writer (along with John Cregan)/director David Gregory keeps things disturbing and moving like a spectral locomotive from hell, so this one never becomes

Blu-ray Review: Tales of the Uncanny (2020)

Director David Gregory (Blood & Flesh: The Reel Life & Ghastly Death of Al Adamson, Lost Soul: The Doomed Journey of Richard Stanley’s Island of Dr. Moreau) sets his sinister sights on the wicked world of arcane anthologies with his latest documentary effort; Tales of the Uncanny, which comes to us on Blu-ray courtesy of those crafty lil’ minxes o’er at Severin! Gregory, along with author and founder of The Miskatonic Institute of Horror Studies Kier-La Janisse, take a chronological journey through the putrid plethora of anthology-style fright flicks that have tickled the fiendish fancy of horror hounds world fuckin’ wide… from the silent era, to the truly suburb Amicus flicks of the shockin’ seventies (and the pictures created by Milton Subotsky after the legendary studio folded), to television (The Twilight Zone, Night Gallery, et al.), to Creepshow and it’s descendants… all is paid heed (though some all too briefly, such as one of yours cruelly’s fav anthology films; Joseph

Blu-ray Review: Blood & Flesh: The Reel Life & Ghastly Death of Al Adamson (2020)

Love his films or hate them (but seriously though… how could you hate such delightful exploitation goodness?) there’s no denying that legendary director Al Adamson had one hell of a life… a life detailed in Severin’s newest Blu-ray release; Blood & Flesh: The Reel Life & Ghastly Death of Al Adamson! Most of you lot are no doubt familiar with Adamson; the shit-kickin’ indie filmmaker that dabbled in all manner of drive-in fare featuring everything from monsters to bikers to secret agents (and so much more) and served up well-seasoned with a dash of John Carradine here, a tit or two there… and pure insanity all around. Seriously just look some of these titles and tell me they aren’t pure rad-ass awesome: Dracula vs. Frankenstein, Satan’s Sadists, Horror of the Blood Monsters… those are fried ghoulish gold thru and thru! Now that’s all freaky fun n’ gory games, but unfortunately Adamson’s life ended up as a true horror show as

Movie Review: Master of Dark Shadows (2019)

Beginning with a brief history of series creator/producer/director Dan Curtis from his start producing golf programs to his bull in a China shop techniques to getting more and more productions on the air to finally arriving at his desire to create a soap opera…and a Gothic thriller infused one at that…Master of Dark Shadows presents a fascinating character study of a man that brought a veritable arcane avalanche of amazing material to our beloved horror biz (Trilogy of Terror and Burnt Offerings are but a few examples besides the subject of this here diabolical doc)! Of course the subject matter soon turns to focus on Dark Shadows itself, in all of it’s outre, horror-show grandeur! We get a deep-dive into the show’s production featuring interviews those that were there (including cast and crew, as well as members of Curtis’ family) and follow along from the shows rocky start to it’s eventual explosion into the pop culture zeitgeist that occurred with
