Review: Dark Horse Comics’ “Midnight Society: The Black Lake #2”

I reviewed the premiere issue of Midnight Society: The Black Lake here and was looking forward to reading the second installment. The first issue blew me away with it’s masterful storytelling, other-worldly artwork, and it’s alluring dialogue. I was sure that the second issue would be just as good, if not better. I was wrong. The suspenseful storytelling was there, the artwork was wonderful again, and the dialogue was brilliant. However, dialogue is basically all there was. The two main characters in this story essentially just talked to each other the whole comic. The buildup to the climax of the story was so long that when the big reveal actually comes it is kind of disappointing. There was very little action whatsoever even though the suspense had you suspecting it at every turn. This issue also left me with more questions than it did answers. The last issue had just enough mystery to keep the reader engaged and wanting more.

Review: Dark Horse Comics’ “Death Head #2”

I reviewed the premiere issue of Death Head here and was excited to read the second installment. I was not disappointed as this title from Dark Horse Comics just keeps getting better. The comic opens up with two utility company workers going down into the sewers to investigate water levels rising due to backed up drains. They find that the tunnel is chock-full of ravenous rats and one of them meets a grisly demise. Next we see Niles at the doctor’s office after coming back from their babymoon. He has a piece of bone embedded in his leg that has to be removed, although it is not his own. He then makes a call to the Shadowcliff National Park Service’s Ranger Station to complain about their vacation from Hell. He is obviously and reasonably upset by their brush with death at the crematorium. Instead of getting some sort of apology, they accuse him of trespassing on private property, and sell

Comic Review: “Blood & Gourd” Issue #1

A bit about this book from it’s creators: It’s Devil’s Night in Olympia, WA – and out at Henderson Farms, the festivities are reaching a crescendo. Young and old have gathered to pick their own pumpkin, drink hot apple cider, and partake in the usual pumpkin farm fare. However, something has awakened from deep within the fertile soil. After years of abuse and humiliation, the pumpkins…are ready to pick us. You can Beg! You can plead! You can scream! But these hell’s lanterns are lit only with the burning desire to watch. You. Die! Through crowd-funding and sheer determination, the Dead Peasant team has successfully conjured up one of the most bizarre, offbeat, and exciting comic books in years. With its roots in the classics and its vines in the new, Blood & Gourd is like EC Comics meets ’70s/’80s cult horror in 2015. Murderous pumpkins and assorted Halloween horrors bring to the fore an all new set of myths

Review: Zenescope Comics’ “Grimm Tales of Terror # 13”

This issue is the final book in Volume One of the Grimm Tales of Terror series. The issue is entitled “Dead Girl Walking”. The book opens with Keres the Goddess of Death posing as a bartender at the Roosevelt Hotel in Los Angeles. The murderously macabre vixen has set her sights set on an older man at the bar. The older man at the bar has been wolfishly eyeing an obviously younger women from afar. It is evident that his intentions are not pure as he slips off his wedding ring and asks the bartender to make him a drink. She mixes his drink and warns him that he should be careful when meeting new people because you can’t always tell what they’re like from looking at them. She then offers to tell him a tale while she pours him the shots he requested. He would do well to take her words to heart. It is also ironic because the reader

Review: Dark Horse Comics’ “Negative Space # 1”

It took me several weeks to obtain a copy of Negative Space # 1 to review as I prefer to review comics in print. It was sold out at every local shop but was available online. After reading it I now understand why. This comic is game-changing. This comic will change lives. I mean that. *Spoiler Alert* The story starts with an American Indian writer named Guy Harris who is struggling with writer’s block. However, this isn’t just any story that he is attempting to pen. He is writing his suicide note. Guy decides to go for an evening stroll to try to calm his mind. He isn’t trying to talk himself out of taking his own life. Rather he is looking for the words to express his feelings to those he will leave behind. He goes to order from a local coffee truck ran by his friend Woody. He gets his coffee and Woody can sense something is wrong.

Review: Dark Horse Comics’ “Death Head # 1”

The premier issue of this comic follows the members of the Burton family in three different plotlines. The first part revolves around Niles and Justine Burton. They are an expectant couple who are going for a weekend camping trip in a National Park for their “babymoon”. They have decided that they need time to bond and unwind before the arrival of their new baby. Instead they find an abandoned town full of moths, with a creepy crematorium, and sinister secrets. The second storyline follows their daughter Maggie who is attending a Catholic school, although she is far from saintly. She has a problem with authority, attending school, following the rules, and no faith in God at all as it turns out. However, she does have a spiritual awakening of sorts with the help of some shrooms she got from the girl she is in love with. The third and final feature follows their son named Bee who is being bullied

Review: Dark Horse Comics’ “The Strain: The Night Eternal # 11”

This is the penultimate issue of The Strain: The Night Eternal series of comics and it is just as exhilarating to read as the show on FX is to watch. The tagline of the comic reads: “FUEL UP FOR THE FINALE-LAST STOP FOR GAS BEFORE THE END OF THE WORLD!” I found that to be very appropriate because the reader is taken for a joyride, with the pedal to the metal from page one. The issue starts off with a bang both literally and figuratively as we find the group of survivors being hounded by a horde of ravenous vampires. While fleeing from this onslaught of bloodsuckers they get split up into two teams. On the way back to the rendezvous point Gus and Nora spot a helicopter and decide to track it. What, or rather who, they discover there will change everything. Vasiliy, Quinlan, and Ephraim reach the meeting place and there they encounter an older couple who tell

Review: Dark Horse Comics’ “Harrow County # 3”

You know that old saying that the third time is the charm? Well, whoever said it was dead on. Issue # 3 of Harrow County is better than the first two installments, and that is saying a lot. Just when I thought that there is nothing that Cullen Bunn and Tyler Crook could do better, they prove me wrong. This issue took the best parts of the first two and melded them into the magnum opus that is Issue #3. This issue begins with Emmy and Bernice surrounded by ghosts who have awakened from their eternal repose. They get closer and closer until Emmy screams at them to stop. They obey her and she is bewildered by it. She screams at them again in frustration because she believes that they were trying to scare her. They shiver in fear and this frightens Emmy. Emmy and Bernice quickly make their way past the gravestones leaving these “haints” behind. It is not

Spectre Show by Shaun Avery & David Broughton

Spectre Show #1 is an interesting independent comic that I found out about when speaking with the comic’s writer, Shaun Avery about the horror anthology project I’m currently working on. The description of the comic provided on the Comicsy website, when combined with the cover, piqued my interest. Fortunately, he and artist/letterist/cover artist David Broughton sent me a digital copy to review and share with you, and I’m back with the results! Comic Description: SPECTRE SHOW #1. Remember where you were the day the gates to the afterlife collapsed? The day humanity discovered that the spirits of the dead could possess their bodies at will, and that those spirits were very, very angry? No? Well, we can’t say we blame you for blocking it out of your mind . . .all that murder, torment and carnage. Let writer Shaun Avery and artist David Broughton and a psychotic TV host called Ted E. Marvel Announces A New Blade Comic Series With Female Lead

Marvel Comics has just announced that there will be a new series featuring a day-walking, vampire-hunting, badass coming this fall. Blade, who was born Eric Brooks, won’t be the titular character this time out though. This time around it will be his 16 year old daughter, Fallon Grey, who will be kicking undead ass and taking names. She will also probably be taking notes seeing as she is still in High School. Fans of the Blade franchise shouldn’t be worried though, as he will still be there to mentor her as a father and train her as a monster hunter. (No word on who the mother is yet) While the comic franchise is getting a reboot, there have also been rumors of the possibility of a new Blade film, which we reported on here. Blade #1 is set to debut this October. In the meantime, stay tuned for further updates on both the comic and the film.
