Meg Author Steve Alten Talks Sharks, New Series, Movies, And His New Interactive Site

Steve Alten, that’s a name most people are familiar with. He’s the best-selling author that brought us the Meg series which was adapted for the big-budget 2018 movie The Meg starring Jason Statham as well as the upcoming sequel. He also has an amazing new interactive website Sea Monster Cove that puts you in the water with ancient sea monsters, features a new exclusive web series, a video game, and a library of Alten’s novels, all for $9.95 a month. It’s continually evolving and adding new aquariums, new monsters, new books, and new series episodes. Before I sat down with Alten for an interview I explored the site, called Sea Monster Cove. I dove into the cove to cage dive with giant Makos and other sea monsters you wouldn’t want to run into. It was quite fantastic. Horror Fuel: “I’m a big fan of Meg. I love anything to do with sharks. Where does your fascination with sharks and ancient

Does the Horror Genre Work When It’s Not a Movie?

When most people think of horror, they think of packed cinemas, lights out, tense music, and the occasional jump scare. Some immediately think of possessed dolls or haunted houses, while others think of fast-moving zombies or an alien invasion. The horror genre is one of the most widespread and can be further segmented into subgenres that have their own dedicated audiences. But what about when we remove the films and look to other media that fit into the genre? Does horror work when it’s not a movie? Books Many may dismiss horror-themed books due to the idea that ‘books can’t be scary.’ Most horror aficionados would tell these naysayers that horror genre books are scarier than most movies. The books last longer, have the tension drawn out, and through the narrative devices allow you to truly get into the shoes of the characters, feeling a personal connection to the tension. Master of horror, Stephen King, helped popularize the genre for

Movie Review: Scary Stories (2019)

To be honest, I was too old for Alvin Schwartz’s Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark series of books, but I was well aware of their existence thanks in no small part to the eye catching, nightmare enduing artwork contained within the tomes (courtesy of Stephen Gammell), but that doesn’t mean I wasn’t into a devious doc detailing the series creation and what it has meant to generations of fright fans n’ horror hounds! First thing you have to realize is that Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark was the most banned book of the 1990’s…and if that doesn’t give that shit unlimited horror biz street cred, I have no idea what would! Of course, that tumultuous moment is detailed in Cody Meirick’s documentary, but there is so much more ground that is covered! We get the genesis of the series creation (featuring interviews with Schwartz’s widow among other peers and family members) that paint a vivid picture

The Deep by Michaelbrent Collings

The Deep by Michaelbrent Collings is an interesting book. Typically when I think of sea monsters, or dangers in the ocean, my immediate thought is Jaws. This book takes that same, deeply rooted fear of both the unknown and the creatures which might dwell there, and exploits them. Initially readers aren’t quite sure of what is going on. The initial chapter hooks you in, while the remaining content provides content and further draws you into the story. (No fishing puns were intended in the writing of this review… But reading back over it, several appear. I apologize in advance.) Book Description: There are places we were never meant to go… *** A woman searching for a sister lost at sea. A man bent on finding lost treasure. A mother who has lost all hope. A maniac who believes all life exists for his pleasure. The man who would keep them all safe. Together, they will all seek below the waves

When We Were Human by Kate L. Mary

When We Were Human by Kate L. Mary is one of those books that I keep meaning to buy, but just haven’t yet. Kate L. Mary is the author of the Broken World series, which I love, and beyond that When We Were Human just was a Silver Medalist for the 2015 Moonbeam Chilldren’s Book Award for YA Fantasy/Science Fiction. Now, to add to that, it’s on sale! The book is typically $3.99, but to celebrate her big award win she has opted to drop the price to $0.99 from now Nov 12-Nov 18th. I’m definitely going to pounce on this offer before it goes away. While the title isn’t technically horror, the premise still reads like something out of a horror movie, so it sounds like it’s definitely worth the investment. Book Description: Eighteen-year-old Eva has spent the last year punishing herself for her sister’s death and hiding from everyone she comes into contact with, human or otherwise. With

The Infected: Nightfall by Joseph Zuko

This post is about The Infected: Nightfall, the third book in Joseph Zuko’s zombie apocalypse survival series. This time around rather than a review I’m posting a book notice. Why? Well, by a bizarre turn of events I actually ended up editing this one. Since I was part of the project, I can’t review it in good conscience, but I will say that as a fan of the first two books in this series – volume three doesn’t disappoint! This book will not only make your heart race, but will tug on your heart strings as well. Book Description: Jim and Karen Blackmore have discovered that when it comes to the zombie apocalypse, there is no such thing as safety in numbers. Between their separate groups of survivors is a city of the living dead, hungry for flesh and growing in numbers by the minute. As Jim and his newly minted gang of zombie killers fight their way to his

THEM Episode 1 of Season 1 by M.D. Massey

THEM Episode 1 of Season 1 by M.D. Massey is a self described “paranormal post-apocalyptic thrill ride”. As with Champagne Jackson Kicks Zombie Ass, THEM immediately had some large shoes to fill by virtue of its tagline and book description. Description: THEM: Season 1, Episode 1 Scratch Sullivan is a professional monster hunter eking out a living after the zombie apocalypse. Z hunter, some would say… but he hunts more than just zombies. You see, there are deadlier predators roaming the badlands, where the fallout and some very nasty inhabitants have made it impossible for all but the bravest and most foolhardy to venture. Thing is, Scratch is happy enough with the odd job killing THEM and occasionally shacking up with his on and off girlfriend, Kara. But when a powerful vampire tips him off to a potential invasion of werewolves and zombies into the safe zone he protects, he’s forced to head straight into the heart of the deadlands
