Movie Reviews (Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival): Leap of Faith: William Friedkin on The Exorcist is a Must-See Documentary

Although in the documentary Leap of Faith: William Friedkin on the Exorcist Friedkin is the only on-camera subject interviewed, the film is riveting stuff throughout its 104-minute running time. The director gives a master class on filmmaking while providing a behind-the-scenes account of what is inarguably one of the greatest horror films ever made. Director Alexandre O. Philippe (who helmed the incredible and highly recommended 78/52: Hitchcock’s Shower Scene) conducts a sit-down interview with Friedkin, who plainly and boldly speaks about the singular mindset he had for The Exorcist, from marking up a hardback copy of William Peter Blatty’s source novel so he could convey exactly what he wanted for the film, through the arduous process of getting the film rolling on production, to anecdotes about how he got the actors to give the terrific performances they did in certain scenes, to the film’s enduring legacy. It’s interesting to also hear who and what didn’t appear in the film, including

Movie Review: Memory: The Origins of Alien (2019)

Memory: The Origins of Alien, the new film from Director Alexandre O. Philippe takes a whole new tack in investigating the creation of Ridley Scott’s Alien; he sets his eerie eyeballs mostly on the period of time before the film began shooting, rather than showing us yet another “making-of” piece… and that is refreshing as all fuck boils n’ ghouls! To that end, much heed is paid to what may have influenced Writer Dan O’Bannon (Return of the Living Dead) to create this story in the first place with the much mentioned It: The Terror From Beyond Space and Mario Bava’s Planet of the Vampires, to lesser known (but obvious) inspiration culled from the writings of H.P. Lovecraft and E.C. Comics, while creating his own unforgettable mythology and world building. Time is also spent examining cool-as-all-fuck late artist H.R. Giger’s undeniable influence on all things xenomorph, as well as what Scott brought to the table (though as the only surviving

Documentary ‘Memory: The Origins Of Alien’ Acquired By Screen Media and Legion M

Screen Media and Legion M announced today that they have acquired the North American rights to Alexandre O. Philippe’s documentary feature film Memory: The Origins of Alien. The film premiered to rave reviews in the Midnight Section at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival and screened at the Hong Kong International Film Festival, CPH: DOX, Hot Docs, and many others. Screen Media and Legion M plan to release the film in theaters this summer, timed to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the theatrical release of Alien. The deal comes on the heels of Screen Media’s recent acquisition of Corporate Animals starring Demi Moore, which also premiered in the Midnight Section of the 2019 Sundance Film Festival. Paris-based Indie Sales is handling sales for the rest of the world. Memory: The Origins of Alien unearths the largely untold origin story behind Ridley Scott’s cinematic masterpiece, and reveals a treasure trove of never-before-seen materials from the archives of Alien creators Dan O’Bannon and

New Documentary To Explore ‘The Origins Of Alien’

The poster has just been unveiled for the genre documentary Memory: The Origins of Alien, from Alexandre O. Philippe who also brought us 78/52 and Doc of the Dead. Now Philippe is delving into the origins of our favorite sci-fi horror film, beginning with the film that came before, Memory. Memory was a script that Dan O’Bannon started in 1971, abruptly hitting a wall at page 29. But after the idea gestated for several years, it ultimately took the form of Ridley Scott’s masterpiece Alien. Alexandre O. Philippe’s documentaries — most recently 78/52, about Hitchcock’s Psycho shower scene — have interrogated cinema’s cultural ripples. If Memory were only a comprehensive account of Alien’s origins — ancient myths, comic books, H.P. Lovecraft, sci-fi movies, and parasitic wasps — it would still be fascinating. But how did Alien lodge itself so indelibly into our cultural imagination? Philippe’s real interest lies in the deep resonance of myths and our collective unconscious. The strange
