Blu-ray Review: Terra Formars (2016)

In a very Blade Runner influenced future; a group of humanity’s rejects (including the likes of a serial killer, the leader of a child prostitution ring, Yakuza members etc.) are loaded onto a spacecraft and sent on their (un)merry way to Mars where they are to eliminate a roach infestation that is the result of a terra-forming project 500 years previous. In exchange for their service they will have their records wiped clean. Sounds like a breeze, right? Well as fate and sci-fi comic book tropes would have it, those roaches have rapidly evolved into humanoid creatures who are quite able to kick some ass. To combat this situation, our “heroes” are given injections that turn them into super-powered half-human/half-insect hybrids…and then the war for Mars is on in earnest! Directed by the master of disturbing Japanese horror Takashi Miike; Terra Formars is a violent, over-the-top- comic book come to life (not surprising as it is adapted from one). You

Blu-ray Review: The Body Snatcher (1945)

Mrs. Marsh (Rita Corday) visits the house of smug asshair Dr. Wolfe “Toddy” MacFarlane (Henry Daniell), seeking a cure for her daughter Georgina’s (Sharyn Moffett) paralysis, which ol’ Toddy recommends surgery as the solution, but tells her he can’t perform it…just build ’em up and knock ’em down you learned douche-nozzle. MacFarlane’s other static comes in the form of his A-No. 1 student Donald Fettes (Russell Wade) who can no longer afford his studies…which Toddy solves by offering Fettes a position assisting in some sort of experiment he is planning…an experiment on cadavers delivered by John Gray (Boris Karloff), a cab driver and graverobber. Speaking of Gray, he has taken a shine to Georgina and blackmails MacFarlane to operate on the girl or else he will reveal the doctor’s “dark secret”. Soon Fettes is swept up in a wicked whirlwind of botched operations, murder, and (possibly) even the supernatural! Full of pitch black shadows and gloom, tortured souls, and a

‘The Dark Tower’ Series Begins Filming This Spring

It feels like every day we are reporting or giving an update on another Stephen King adaptation (not that we are complaining). Today we have an update on Amazon Studios’ upcoming series adaptation of King’s The Dark Tower. According to That Hashtag Show, the series is set to begin production this April in Croatia and will have a 13-episode first season. Casting is still being kept hush, hush at this point but it will be interesting to see who is cast in the roles of Roland and Walter. The 2017 movie starred Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey, and while it had King’s support before the PG-13 release, after it opened in theaters he got very quiet. By the end of it, The Dark Tower only scored a mere 16 on Rotten Tomatoes. Fans were let down due to the amount of story that was left out due to time constraints and the way that everything was rushed to try to

Blu-ray Review: The House with a Clock in Its Walls (2018)

Young orphan Lewis (Owen Vaccaro) is the type of kid that takes to memorizing dictionaries rather than engaging in the folly of youth. Anyway, Lewis soon takes up residence with his eccentric clock obsessed uncle Jonathon (Jack Black) in his Victorian mansion…a mansion filled with living furniture and more magic than most households (which admittedly hover somewhere around zero on the magic-o-meter). It doesn’t take Lewis long to learn that Jonathan is a real life warlock, and his associate Florence Zimmerman (Cate Blanchett) is no slouch in that department either, which is a damn good thing as the house was once owned by an evil warlock named Isaac Izard (Kyle MacLachlan) who left a clock hidden within the mansion walls that can bring about doomsday when it’s countdown ends. Can our erstwhile heroes find the demonic timepiece before the end of the world…and before Izard himself arrives from the afterlife? Filled with magic, monsters, re-animated corpses, a heartfelt story-line involving
