New Documentary To Explore ‘The Origins Of Alien’

The poster has just been unveiled for the genre documentary Memory: The Origins of Alien, from Alexandre O. Philippe who also brought us 78/52 and Doc of the Dead. Now Philippe is delving into the origins of our favorite sci-fi horror film, beginning with the film that came before, Memory. Memory was a script that Dan O’Bannon started in 1971, abruptly hitting a wall at page 29. But after the idea gestated for several years, it ultimately took the form of Ridley Scott’s masterpiece Alien. Alexandre O. Philippe’s documentaries — most recently 78/52, about Hitchcock’s Psycho shower scene — have interrogated cinema’s cultural ripples. If Memory were only a comprehensive account of Alien’s origins — ancient myths, comic books, H.P. Lovecraft, sci-fi movies, and parasitic wasps — it would still be fascinating. But how did Alien lodge itself so indelibly into our cultural imagination? Philippe’s real interest lies in the deep resonance of myths and our collective unconscious. The strange

New Documentary Goes ‘Searching For Cannibal Holocaust’

Film critic and author Calum Waddell is going to take fans inside one of the world’s most controversial films in his documentary Searching for Cannibal Holocaust. Basically, it is the story of how Cannibal Holocaust has impacted upon the lives of a number of people, including myself,” Waddell told Rue Morgue. During the filming of the documentary, Waddell not only interviewed a number of those involved with the film but also traveled to the Amazon to visit locations where the film was made. In Cannibal Holocaust, a professor on a rescue mission in the Amazon rainforest stumbles across lost film shot by a missing documentary crew. Director Ruggero Deodato‘s infamous Cannibal Holocaust (aka Monsieur Cannibal) has been banned in several countries since its release in 1980. Documentary Film Review – Bloodlines:The Art and Life of Vincent Castiglia

John Borowski is well known for his documentary films, which give an in-depth look at various serial killers. Not only has Borowski focused on the likes of Carl Panzram, Albert Fish and H.H. Holmes, but has also done a documentary and subsequent TV series that explore the cultural obsession and influence of serial killers on society, aptly named Serial Killer Culture. This most recent documentary, which marks a bit of a departure from Borowski’s usual subject matter, deals with abuse, pain and anguish, all painted in a very different light. His subject this time is Vincent Castiglia, a well-known and renowned artist, whose preferred medium is human blood…primarily his own. So to say this man puts his life force into his work would be absolutely true. What Borowski does in this film is give the viewer a glimpse into the life of this artist that is incredibly straight forward and raw. He not only details Vincent’s brilliant artwork, but also

Movie Review: Family of Fear (2018)

Family of Fear focuses on a the family run haunt attraction Arx Mortis; a horror house USA Today rated as one of the best in the country…until it all fell to a steamin’ pile of not-so-sinister shit. To remedy that, these freaky folks go through quite an overhaul including; actor training, expanding the size of the attraction, and ending the cliques that made new recruits to the revoltin’ ranks feel un-welcome. Will Arx Mortis regain it’s legendary status in the horror biz, or has the death knell sounded? With an emphasis both on the behind the scenes preparation and managing of the haunted attraction, as well as the wildly disparate folks, many of them social outcasts who have found a sense of family at Arx Mortis, that are attracted to acting in the haunt, Family of Fear is an absolutely thoroughly engaging documentary that not only makes you root for the folks that own the haunted house to succeed, but

Movie Review: The Bray Road Beast (2018)

Documentarian of the Cryptids Seth Breedlove is back, and this time he turns his eerie eyeballs an a wicked werewolf legend in The Bray Road Beast! Elkhorn, Wisconsin is a bucolic lil’ town, sleepy, possessed of a small populace…and a red eyed werewolf that can run 55 mph and lives on Bray Road (home to the Bray family, who do not seem like werewolves to me, but I’m no expert at lycanthrope in human form identification)…you know, the usual. Of course as the film digs deeper we learn that this area sits in an area surrounded by strange happenings, outre cults, and that whole Slenderman stabbing incident of a few years back. Of course everyone has a theory as to just what the titular beast is, and all the usual explanations make their appearance; Native american curse, occult summoned hell beast, the aforementioned werewolf theory…regardless of what it is, there are plenty of spooky-ass stories about whatever it is; and

Movie Review: World of Darkness (2018)

Personal anecdote time (it’s relevant, trust me): I was always a Dungeons and Dragons type of guy (with some other tabletops thrown in), and never played Vampire:The Masquerade. The game seemed tailor made to my interests, and I had friends that played…hell, I even had some of the books (collected for the breathtaking Tim Bradstreet (who is interviewed in the doc) artwork, and avidly watched the TV show spun off from the game…but I never rolled a single die. Why? Who the fuck knows! Books could be written on the mind-boggling choices i made in my misspent youth…but this whole thing brings us to the review subject at hand… Comprised of interviews with the creators, players, and appreciators of Vampire:The Masquerade; World of Darkness is a deep dive into what made the game, and White Wolf, the company that created it, so special and influenced not only people to play the game but embrace the vampiric, Goth lifestyle as well.
