Movie Review: The Phenomenon (2020)

You know those ol’ U.F.O. docs from the sinister ’70s that would present fanciful tales of encounters with arcane aliens and the far-out craft they piloted all served up with info from questionable “experts”. Well let me tell ya, The Phenomenon sure as shit isn’t that! So, what is it? Pound for pound one of the most credible flying saucer documentaries I’ve ever laid my eerie eyeballs on, that’s what it is (and believe you me cats n’ creeps, I’ve laid my putrid peepers on more than my fair share of these)! Director James Fox shoves the mystery of just what has been in our skies for countless years, and the world spanning attempt to keep a lid on that shit with the quickness. Now that would be fine and dandy in and of itself, but over the course of this flick’s runtime we hear some pretty damn solid testimony from astronauts, military brass, and government officials, along with some

Movie Review (Twisted Dreams Film Festival): VHS Massacre Too

Whereas the documentary VHS Massacre (2016) took a nostalgic look at the decline of VHS and other physical media, its new sequel VHS Massacre Too focuses on such current issues as the lack of interest and even refusal of large streaming platforms — currently the most popular mode of movie consumption — to feature low-budget exploitation films. The documentary takes a sound look at the problem and how it affects independent filmmakers, cast, and crew members. Director Thomas Edward Seymour kicks the film off with film critic Joe Bob Briggs and others discussing exploitation films, censorship, and related topics from the Hays Code onward. It’s a brief but informative introduction and sets the table well for later censorship discussions, such as Blockbuster Video’s refusal to carry certain types of movies. Briggs is just one of several talking heads in the documentary. He provides fine insight on how films can become obscure and even lost without physical media. Filmmaker and actor

Movie Review: Nail in the Coffin: The Fall and Rise of Vampiro (2019)

Ian Richard Hodgkinson, or Vampiro as he’s known to you cats n’ creeps, is one hell of a dude. Born in Montreal, Canada, Vampiro got it in his head (after a few mishaps we’ll get to in a bit) to head to Mexico, learn Spanish, and even though he had no clue how to wrestle, become one of the most legendary figures to ever step into the squared circle south of the boarder. Now there is conflict and drama involved, but this doc let’s you know from the get go that things turned out pretty damn good for our vicious vamp as it shows him in his current role of talent director for Lucha Libre AAA in Mexico and Lucha Underground in Los Angeles. But, as stated things are still complicated for our hero as he is working two jobs, while trying to be a good father to his teenage daughter who lives in Ontario. It’s this element that brings

Movie Reviews (Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival): Leap of Faith: William Friedkin on The Exorcist is a Must-See Documentary

Although in the documentary Leap of Faith: William Friedkin on the Exorcist Friedkin is the only on-camera subject interviewed, the film is riveting stuff throughout its 104-minute running time. The director gives a master class on filmmaking while providing a behind-the-scenes account of what is inarguably one of the greatest horror films ever made. Director Alexandre O. Philippe (who helmed the incredible and highly recommended 78/52: Hitchcock’s Shower Scene) conducts a sit-down interview with Friedkin, who plainly and boldly speaks about the singular mindset he had for The Exorcist, from marking up a hardback copy of William Peter Blatty’s source novel so he could convey exactly what he wanted for the film, through the arduous process of getting the film rolling on production, to anecdotes about how he got the actors to give the terrific performances they did in certain scenes, to the film’s enduring legacy. It’s interesting to also hear who and what didn’t appear in the film, including

Blu-ray Review: The Wild, Wild World of Jayne Mansfield (1968)

Jayne Mansfield, apparently quite the international jet-setter, is kind enough to take us along on her last tour around the globe. Make sure you take your Dramamine as I suspect this is going to be a bumpy-ass ride… We start off in Rome, where Jayne just putzes around nearly deserted streets (in black and white footage… remember this)… but c’mon, Jayne is a big star, they aren’t really selling it… oh, wait… thankfully stock footage of countless people looking at… something… has been spliced in (via color footage). Ciao Bella Mrs. Mansfield… After more stock footage, some people eventually show up and Jayne gets her ass pinched (which may be more stock footage… but definitely involves a look-alike) in the middle of the afternoon, watches some ladies take their clothes off, fills us in on the games of the coliseums (via scenes from an old Hercules picture and a rando soccer game), fantasizes about dragons and ancient orgies (thankfully not

Blu-ray Review: Mondo Balordo (1964)

After a big spoon of hippie-dippy bullshit (set to some pseudo-Vic Damone crooning) that attempts to rationalize the horrors we will doubtfully soon witness, Mondo Balordo gets underway… … and in less than five minutes we get handicapped, and possibly deranged, people busking, a man that can inflate his stomach to asinine degrees, and sex with a midget prostitute… fuck me (but not like our little person harlot), this is going to be a bumpy ride… oh, and Boris Karloff of all people is mixed up in this too… Moving on we get a thick stew of Hercules flick stock-footage, exercises to reinvigorate the tiddies of ol’ biddies, strip shows, light S&M, female rasslin’ … and so much, much more. Also a blonde-haired Buddy Holly clone sings some song that is an unholy combination of ’50’s rock mixed with the manic energy of Guitar Wolf set to images of native peoples dancing to god knows what… honestly, that was my
