Angelina Jolie As The Bride Of Frankenstein ?

Universal has already begun putting together their shared universe, which includes remaking all of their classic monster films. The revamp began with 2014’s Dracula Untold. Both The Mummy and Creature from the Black Lagoon are already in the early stages of pre-production. News broke earlier today that The Bride of Frankenstein is now too in the works. And Universal is not eyeing just any starlet for the role, they are aiming for Angelina Jolie, according to THR. There is no word yet who will be writing the screenplay or who will be in the director’s chair, but hopefully we will know more about the film soon. The original 1935 film, directed by James Whale, starred Boris Karloff as Frankenstein’s monster, one his most famous roles. Elsa Lanchester played the role of the monster’s bride, who did not appear until the film’s final scenes, but with such a famous star cast in the role I’m sure the Bride will have more

A Whole New Thing: When a Remake Isn’t a Remake

It’s Not A Remake The Thing, 2011, is NOT a remake. It is a prequel. I just did more than the entire Universal Studios marketing department with that clarification. John Carpenter got royally screwed on his 1982 masterpiece. Some call The Thing his greatest film. Others, like me, call it one of the greatest films ever made for any genre. Carpenter’s film was buried in 1982 by a candy pilfering alien and Spielberg. Between a lackluster marketing campaign by Universal Studios and America’s pop sugar desire for heart glowing aliens, The Thing, 1982, never really had a chance. Carpenter himself saw the handwriting on the wall after exiting a plane to giant advertisements for ET: The Extraterrestrial. “We’re done,” he lamented. However home video and cable gave his film a new life, and eventually the tortoise caught up and passed the alien. Today, Carpenter’s film is regarded as timeless and as mentioned, by many, his best. The film is deserving

Psycho II…The Slasher Dodges a Bullet

Norman Bates Is Coming Home… Summer, 1983. No Internet. No DVD extras. No “sneak peaks.” There were a handful of magazines to get your entertainment and especially your horror news and Fangoria was mine. I got my first subscription in 1980 and kept it through most of high school. At one point my mother asked me, “Are you sure you don’t want Playboy or something?” Unlike Norman Bates, I had plenty of girlfriends. Boobs I could see any time, but horror? That was serious shit and it came in the mail addressed to me. The slasher film dominated 80s horror. Carpenter’s Halloween hit in 1978 and the original Friday the 13th was ripping off at its heels, and both birthed franchises that spanned an entire decade and beyond. Psychopaths with knives and a variety of tools populated movie houses and late night cable. Most horror scholars will acknowledge the sub genre was peaking around 1983. Friday the 13th was winding

Jaws Could Be Getting A Reboot And That Bites

Steven Spielberg’s distribution deal for DreamWorks will be ending with Disney in August 2016. Spielberg is looking for a new home for DreamWorks. He’s has always had a good relationship with Universal, making them the most likely choice. Ok, horror fans, get ready, this is going to piss you off. According to The Hollywood Reporter “He also is key on potential reboots of other Universal franchises such as ‘JAWS’ and ‘Back to the Future’.” Bloody Hell! It seems Universal is keen on rebooting one of our most cherished films of all time, ‘Jaws’. Is nothing Sacred ? Hold on just a second before you grab your picket signs, it’s not 100% concrete that ‘Jaws’ will be rebooted yet, but lets face it, studios will do anything to turn a profit. There are over sixty reboots/remakes being made as we speak, can’t they leave ‘Jaws’ alone? Better yet, it would be nice if they would stop remaking every film, just because

Deadline broke the news that Warner Bros. has accepted a pitch from Dwain Worrell, writer of the film ‘Walking the Dead’, to make an adaption of Dante Alighieri’s 14th century epic poem ‘The Divine Comedy’ and will begin with the first of the three books that make the poem, ‘Dante’s Inferno’. The original poem, set in 1300, is split into three parts/books, Inferno, Purgatorio and Paradiso. In the ‘Inferno’ poem Dante, heart broken by the lost of his love, Beatrice, is met by the dead poet Virgil while walking in the woods. In ‘Inferno’ Dante is guided through the nine circles of Hell by Virgil. The film adaption will follow Dante through the nine circles to save the woman he loves. This is where the film will differ from the poem, at no point does Dante seek to save his Beatrice. In fact in the in the poem Beatrice saves Dante at the end of ‘Purgatorio’ and replaces Virgil as

Jaws 3D: The Third Dimension Is Cynema

Third Time’s A Charm Hey, weren’t you in Jaws 3? Why do they make shit like that?” — Fan to Dennis Quaid, star of Jaws 3D I’m going to say that while Jaws 3 is a bad film, it is not totally Cynema. The third shark film was planned as a spoof called Jaws 3, People 0. A script written by National Lampoon’s Vacation Matty Simmons and 16 Candles, Breakfast Club teen king John Hughes exists online. It was to be directed by Jaws ripoff artist Joe Dante of the cult film Piranha (remade as the fun Piranha 3D. How things have come full circle). When the producers of Jaws and Jaws 2, Richard Zanuck and David Brown were approached by Universal to produce a spoof as a third installment, they declined. “It would have been like fouling your own nest,” Brown said. Universal went forward anyway. According to the Jaws 3D.com blog, director Joe Alves revealed how he came
