John Carpenter Confirms Involvement With New Reboot Of ‘The Thing’

For fans of John Carpenter, we have some exciting news. This Saturday, while the Master of Horror was receiving his Lifetime Achievement Award during the Fantasia Film Festival (full interview below), he confirmed several projects. One of those projects is Blumhouse and Universal’s reboot of The Thing. As previously reported, the new film as well as Carpenter’s 1982 movie, is inspired by acclaimed science fiction author John W. Campbell’s Who Goes There?, about a team of scientists in Antarctica who discover and are terrorized by a monstrous, shape-shifting alien. The new film will also draw from Frozen Hell, a recently unearthed novella that serves as an abridged version of Campbell’s original story. In all, there are already three film versions of the same story, The Thing from Another World (1951), Carpenter’s 1982 film The Thing, and 2011’s The Thing from director Matthijs van Heijningen Jr. Blumhouse and Universal’s reboot will be number four. It will be interesting to see how

Artist Spotlight: Giuseppe Balestra

A little while back I did a review of the new fantastic Ghostbusters Art Book, a collection of amazing artists paying tribute to the iconic movie. In my review, I listed some of my favorite pieces, the poster by the incredibly talented artist Giuseppe Balestra. I feel that Giuseppe’s artwork deserves a more in-depth look. Born in Rome and raised in South Italy, the artist prefers using pen and inks, cross-hatching and stippling, before eventually combining digital color, drawing inspiration from literature, movies, especially horror and fantasy. I like to create illustrations in which the darkness of the shadows stands in contrast to the light. They’ve been called “melancholic, mysterious and poetic. I’ve always loved doing art since I was a child, always experimenting with all kinds of media. I published my first work in late 2015 in The Lovecraft eZine vol.36 and since then I’ve been doing it professionally, working on internal illustrations and covers for books, posters, and

The World Of ‘The Thing’ Expanding With New Adaptation ‘Frozen Hell’

John Carpenter’s The Thing was the second adaptation of John W. Campbell’s novella Who Goes There?, with 1951’s The Thing from Another World being the first adaptation. The world is expanding, Bloody Disgusting reports. In 2018, John Betancourt discovered a new, never-before-seen novel-length version of the story, titled Frozen Hell and took to Kickstarter to release it. Now, there has been a new development. This week, Betancourt gave an exciting update that he is teaming up with Blumhouse and Universal Studios for a feature film adaptation. Betancourt states, “In 1938, acclaimed science fiction author John W. Campbell published the novella Who Goes There?, about a team of scientists in Antarctica who discover and are terrorized by a monstrous, shape-shifting alien entity. The story would later be adapted into John Carpenter’s iconic movie The Thing (following an earlier film adaptation in 1951). The published novella was actually an abridged version of Campbell’s original story, called Frozen Hell, which had to be

Three Films Based On One Book, Who Got It Right?

In August of 1938, readers of Astounding Science-Fiction Magazine beat the summer heat by reading a chilling science-fiction story that took them to the heart of Antarctica where a group of scientists was trapped along with a shape-shifting extraterrestrial. That story was Who Goes There?, by Don A. Stuart, the pen name of John W. Campbell Jr. The story was later reprinted in book form where Campbell used his real name. The novella eventually spawned three movies, the first one in 1951 titled The Thing from Another World that was followed up by John Carpenter’s 1982 cult classic The Thing (it spawned a video game as well as a series of comics.) which was followed up by the 2011 prequel using the same name. Three movies based on one book. The film industry is known for taking a book and making it into a film with mixed results, usually negative. So the question remains, out of the three films based

The (Stranger) Thing

In 2002 fans of the movie The Thing where able to partake in a new chapter of the film’s universe by playing the 3rd person survival horror game, ‘The Thing’ where players take on the role of Captain Blake, a Special Forces soldier sent in with a rescue team to find survivors at the doomed U.S. Outpost 31 from John Carpenter’s film. Long story short, the events of the film and this game were part of some nefarious plot by a Biotechnology company called Gen-Inc who has subterranean research facilities all around Antarctica studying the alien organism in which a certain strain of the “Virus” was developed to be used in Biological Warfare. The game surprisingly did very well in the ratings and in 2003 the game’s developing company, Computer Artworks, were in the works to make a sequel to the game picking up where it left off, Blake flying off in a helicopter with R.J. MacReady, the protagonist from

Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight Features Unused Tracks From The Thing

The music for the epic horror classic The Thing (1982), directed by John Carpenter, was composed by the legendary Ennio Morricone. But not all of the music Morricone created for the The Thing was actually used in the film and sat dormant, until now. Brilliant filmmaker Quentin Tarantino has made use of the previously unused music. Tarantino was working with Morricone to complete the soundtrack for his film The Hateful Eight, which is now in theaters, pressed for time, and still trying to find the perfect score for his film, he brought up the unused tracks and Morricone approved. The track was recut and can be heard in the film, along with twenty-five minutes of other music. You will be able to pick up the soundtrack when it is released on deluxe vinyl early next year. The Hateful Eight is set in post-Civil War Wyoming. Eight men, trying to survive a blizzard, get involved in a plot of betrayal and
