Megan Freels Johnston, that’s a name you should get familiar with because you are going to be hearing it a lot in the very near future. I sat down with the writer/director/producer to talk about her past film The Ice Cream Truck and her upcoming films, The Hunting Season and Payback’s a Bitch. Horror Fuel: “Where did you find the inspiration for your film The Ice Cream Truck?” Megan Freels Johnston: “I lived in a neighborhood that happens to have a lot of ice cream trucks and I had just moved there. What struck me about those ice cream trucks was that they were actually selling the whole ice cream cones and banana splits. When I grew up they just sold wrapped up ice cream bars. It seemed so old-fashioned to me. I had just had my second child and I was home with the baby. I kept hearing the trucks go by with the music. It occurred to me

Writer-director Megan Freel Johnston’s psychological thriller The Ice Cream Truck (review) will be arriving on Blu-ray and DVD this week from Uncork’d Entertainment. In the film, Mary’s husband gets relocated for work which allows her to move back to her suburban hometown. As her family ties up loose ends back home, Mary moves into their new house all alone and….waits. Yet in this idealistic world, something seems very odd. The Ice Cream Man, a symbol of youth and good times, starts killing some of her neighbors. Mary soon learns that the suburbs are scarier in more ways than she ever remembered. Deanna Russo (Being Human, Gossip Girl) stars as Mary. Dana Gaier (Despicable Me 3), John Redlinger (Thirst, Banshee), Emil Johnsen (Isolerad), Hilary Barraford (Go For Sisters), Jeff Daniel Phillips (31), and Lisa Ann Walter (War of the Worlds) co-star in The Ice Cream Truck which our writer Jeffrey Scott labeled as a “sweet treat” (review). Ice cream trucks are one of the few remaining relics from a time since gone bye, a traveling vehicle of sweets, playing it’s merry tune, bringing children running from their houses, scooping out joy one cone at a time. So of course a horror movie has to come along and make them fucked up. Enter The Ice Cream Truck, a surprisingly smart film about infidelity, reclaiming lost youth, and yes, a murderous ice cream man who stabs his customers after making them their favorite chocolate shake. Held together by strong acting, smart writing, and one of the creepier vehicles ever put to screen, this one is a real summer treat. Honestly, if you’re getting your deserts from anything that looks like a (barely) disguised peso van, you deserve to die. Deanna Russo does an absolutely fantastic job as scream queen Mary, a mom and (sometimes) writer for longs for her carefree youth. And carefree youth is dutifully supplied to her

It’s not always true that you can never go home again. In fact, Mary, her husband and their two children are all relocating to the suburbs of Mary’s hometown. Mary arrives at their new home first, while her husband and kids wrap up things back in Seattle before coming out to join her. Left on her own to face the suburban monotony, Mary makes an earnest attempt to play nice with local suburbanites. Existing in the suburbs is not what it used to be and is definitely not for the faint of heart, and for Mary it’s the equivalent of fitting a square peg in a round hole. But complacency can be a dangerous thing in the ‘burbs, especially when some dangers are hidden behind a seemingly innocent facade. Megan Freels Johnston was at the helm for this film, which she also wrote the screenplay for. The vilification of those summertime purveyors of frozen treats and novelties is nothing new.
