Movie Review: Censor

Director/cowriter Prano Bailey-Bond expands on the video nasties theme she explored in her terrific 2015 short film Nasty with her feature-length debut Censor (U.K., 2021). This gripping psychological horror film rises high above mere pastiche to present a dark tale that recalls and reflects the luridness of some of the movies that made headlines in the United Kingdom in the early 1980s for being criticized for their violent content. Enid (Niamh Algar) works on a board of censors who approve or deny films for their content, so she must watch many horror films and approve or deny their often grisly and disturbing content. She becomes a target of hatred when someone commits a murder seemingly based on a killing in a film she approved, and matters get worse when film producer Frederick North (Adrian Schiller) brings her his latest film, which seems chillingly similar to the real-life disappearance of her sister. ‘Censor’ Takes Us Into The World Of “Video Nasties” This June

Director Prano Bailey-Bond, who is making their feature debut, takes us into the world of “video nasties” in the new horror film Censor, out this June. Starring Niamh Algar, the film centers on “Enid, who takes pride in her meticulous work, guarding unsuspecting audiences against the deleterious effects of watching the gore-filled decapitations and eye gougings she pores over. Her sense of duty to protect is amplified by guilt over her inability to recall details of the long-ago disappearance of her sister, recently declared dead in absentia. When Enid is assigned to review a disturbing film from the archive that echoes her hazy childhood memories, she begins to unravel how this eerie work might be tied to her past.” Prano Bailey-Bond and Anthony Fletcher penned the script for Censor that also stars. ‘From The Dark’ A New Horror Movie From The Director Of ‘Stitches’

Conor McMahon, the director of the horror movie ‘Stiches’, comes a new tale of terror, titled ‘From The Dark’. This vampire movie stars Stephen Cromwell (The Sea), Niamh Alger (North Circular), Ged Murray (35 Up) and ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest’ actor Gary O’Brian. “A Sinister being has awakened from a thousand year sleep and it has set it’s sights on the stranded young couple. Deep within the dark bog, the two are faced with an unimaginable evil, but they soon realize that there may be one thing that can stop the creature: light. As the sun sets and light sources dwindle, the creature becomes more powerful, and Sarah and Mark find themselves in a fight for their lives where a gas lamp or just the illumination of a single match may be the only ting that can save them.” ‘From The Dark’ is now available on DVD, Blu-Ray and VOD and Digital Download from Dark Sky Films.
