Making a Killing

…with “other things being equal, simpler explanations are generally better than more complex ones.” — Occam’s Razor Read the above statement on Occam’s Razor. This post is about the “docuseries” Making a Murderer, the Netflix “docuseries” that has a second season coming. This post is not about whether Steven Avery is guilty or innocent. It is not about whether there are injustices in our legal system. We know there are. This piece is about the cynicism behind making a piece of entertainment disguised as social crusading. I was inspired to write this after trying to make my point in a series of online tweets. There was backlash from people who made it about a social cause, and that I was ignoring the issues in our criminal justice system. My point was simple: Making a Murderer is not about the correction of our legal system or justice for a man wrongly accused. The series is about entertainment. Manipulation Set aside your

Horror Fuel’s X-Files Recap to Start January 9th

In honor of the X-Files revival, Fox Television had a pretty cool promotion running to honor a show whose pop culture impact has lasted nearly 22 years, “201 Days of the X-Files.” The promotion was done through social media and required fans to watch one episode a day, in order, until the series revival premier on January 24th. The Official X-Files Instagram and Twitter posted screen grabs with the season name and episode number for the day. While Fox was busy promoting the revival with posters, and teasers, some pretty neat fan art arose from the original “201 Days” promotion. Here is one of my favorites, provided by @201xfdoodles, where a fan drew a “doddle” of each episode. Even Agents Mulder and Scully (David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson) had some fun engaging with fans and answering questions during certain episodes. __________________________________ Being a long time fan of The X-files, I decided to play along and re-watch the series. David Fincher And Charlize Theron Collaborating On Mindhunter Series For Netflix

David Fincher and Charlize Theron are teaming up again. The two worked together before, on Gone Girl and Dark Places. This time the duo will be collaborating on a new original project for Netflix, titled Mindhunter: Inside the FBI’s Elite Serial Crime Unit. The series is based on the book written by Joe Douglas. Joe Penhall has signed on as writer. It is not clear at this point if he will also serve as showrunner. In the series Special Agent John Douglas, a twenty-five-year veteran of the Investigative Support Unit, is a legend in his own right. Douglas has pursued some of the most notorious and sadistic killers of our time. As the model for Jack Crawford in The Silence of the Lambs, Douglas has confronted, interviewed and study scores of serial killers, including Manson, Bundy and Gein, who dressed himself in his victim’s skin. Now, in chilling detail, the legendary Mindhunter will take us on a behind the scenes

Movie Review: The Canal (2014)

David, a film archivist has been having a tough time lately. David has been going through old reels of crime scene footage at work and stumbled across a video of a crime scene in his new home. To top everything off, David suspects his wife (Alice) may be having an affair. David soon begins hearing voices and seeing shadow figures around him. When Alice disappears David’s world descends into chaos and now his son is in serious danger. The Canal was written and directed by Ivan Kavanagh and stars ‘Hellboy’ actor Rupert Evans as the main character, David. This supernatural tale also stars Hannah HoekstraAnit (APP) as David’s wife Alice. Campbell-Hughes (Albert Nobbs) as David’s coworker. Many other fine actors are listed as cast members. I have to say, I really didn’t expect much from ‘The Canal’, but in the end I was pleasantly surprised. Rupert Evans did a great job in is role as David. He really sales the
