‘Diablo House’ Comic Review–An Old School Horror Comic

Earlier this month, IDW comics released a new series called Diablo House. I’ll admit, this comic snuck up on me as I hadn’t heard much about it prior to the release. It debuted at San Diego Comic Con last month and hit the stores early in August. Let me just say from the start that I really, really liked this book. It’s a nasty look into human nature (mainly anger…), and the first issue plays on the ancient story of Faust. A man who started in a business with nothing soon gains everything his heart could ever desire, only to piss it all away during booze-soaked escapades. Not exactly a new concept, but hey–if it ain’t broke don’t fix it. There are a few twists thrown in here and there to keep you turning the pages, and for me anyway, I can’t wait until next month’s issue. Diablo House feels like an old school E.C. comic. Martillo: Devil-Smiter by Greg Meldrum and David Broughton

Martillo: Devil-Smiter by Greg Meldrum and David Broughton is an independent comic by one of the creators of Spectre Show, which I reviewed a few weeks back. This story, while ripe with all the edgy artwork David Broughton typically brings to the table, is instead about 1950s Spain. A man stands between humanity and supernatural wickedness. …and Pablo Picasso, apparently. (I was as bewildered as you when I first read that, I promise.) Since I enjoyed Spectre Show, I definitely wanted to give Martillo a chance. Book Description: It is 1948, and General Franco’s fascist government rules Spain with an iron fist. Isolated from the rest of Europe, the country has become a breeding ground for supernatural wickedness – and that’s where Martillo comes in. A servant of the Saint of Labourers, Martillo wields a hammer and smites evil – HARD! In this collection, Martillo takes on pagan storm-gods, metal-obsessed spectres, sadistic thorn-monsters, gold-eating devil-weasels, hungry bogeymen and Pablo Picasso!

Spectre Show by Shaun Avery & David Broughton

Spectre Show #1 is an interesting independent comic that I found out about when speaking with the comic’s writer, Shaun Avery about the horror anthology project I’m currently working on. The description of the comic provided on the Comicsy website, when combined with the cover, piqued my interest. Fortunately, he and artist/letterist/cover artist David Broughton sent me a digital copy to review and share with you, and I’m back with the results! Comic Description: SPECTRE SHOW #1. Remember where you were the day the gates to the afterlife collapsed? The day humanity discovered that the spirits of the dead could possess their bodies at will, and that those spirits were very, very angry? No? Well, we can’t say we blame you for blocking it out of your mind . . .all that murder, torment and carnage. Let writer Shaun Avery and artist David Broughton and a psychotic TV host called Ted E. Scare be your memory. But be warned –
