Final Girls Berlin Film Festival Preview: Killers, Thrillers, and Chillers of All Stripes Are on Tap

The fifth edition of Final Girls Berlin Film Festival takes place February 6–9, 2020 at City Kino Wedding as the fest continues to raise the bar by showcasing horror movies written, directed, and/or produced by women and nonbinary filmmakers. Festival codirector Eli Lewy calls this year’s festival edition the “most expansive and international yet, presenting a wide array of films by visionary filmmakers that represent the diversity and originality that can be found in the current horror landscape.” The exciting program features eight curated short blocks and nine feature films, a horror-inspired self-defense workshop, an exhibition, a festival party with multimedia drag performances, and specialist talks on horror martyrs, made-for-TV horror, “female monsters,” and “bad mothers” in Mexican horror cinema. “Horror is a very elastic term,” said fellow co-director Sara Neidorf, “and we’re excited to discover films that make us question and expand our conceptions of what horror can be, both in ways that are distant from and uncannily near

Manson Movie ‘Charlie Says’ Coming To Theaters And VOD

Ahead of the 50th anniversary of the Manson Family Murders this August, director Mary Harron explores the family and Charles Manson’s hold over the women who committed those terrible killings in the film Charlie Says. Years after the shocking murders that made the name Charles Manson synonymous with pure evil, the three women who killed for him—Leslie Van Houten (Hannah Murray), Patricia Krenwinkel (Sosie Bacon), and Susan Atkins (Marianne Rendón)—remain under the spell of the infamous cult leader (Matt Smith). Confined to an isolated cellblock in a California penitentiary, the trio seems destined to live out the rest of their lives under the delusion that their crimes were part of a cosmic plan—until empathetic graduate student Karlene Faith (Merritt Wever) is enlisted to rehabilitate them. Convinced the prisoners are not the inhuman monsters the world believes them to be, Karlene begins the arduous process of breaking down the psychological barriers erected by Manson. But are the women ready to confront

Movie Review: Charlie Says

Let’s face it, there have been a lot of films based on real serial killers over the past couple of years. On killer seems to be more popular than others, Charles Manson. Maybe it’s because his and his “family’s” is the most intriguing case. Director Mary Harron set out to tell the Manson Family’s tale from a unique angle in Charlie Says. The film centers on Leslie Van Houten (Hannah Murray) who joins the Manson Family, a path that turns her from an innocent girl into a convicted killer. Charles Manson (Matt Smith) sends her to commit the LaBianca murders. Van Houten, Susan Atkins (Marianne Redón), and Patricia Krenwinkel (Sosie Bacon). We watch as Leslie arrives at the Manson settlement. We get glimpses of her story first as she meets the Family, then in the form of flashbacks as the three women from the Manson Family sit in their cells or while talking about the events with Karlene Faith, a
