Movie Review: Harbinger Down (2015)

Last night I popped a bag of popcorn and settled in to watch Alec Gillis’ new horror film ‘Harbinger Down’. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but the special effects master did not disappoint. You should recognize Gillis’ name. He has done the special effects for many films including ‘Aliens’, ‘The Monster Squad’ (1987), ‘AVP’, ‘Ender’s Game’ and several films of the ‘Tremors’ franchise. ‘Gillis’ both wrote and directed ‘Harbinger Down’, which stars horror veteran Lance Henriksen (Aliens), Matt Winston (Star Trek: Enterprise), Camille Balsamo (Murder in the First), Giovonnie Samuels (Freedom Writers), Reid Collums (Whiplash), Winston James Francis (Little Boy), Milla Bjorn (Angel), Michael Estime (Beyond Merritt), Edwin H. Bravo (Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End), Mick Ignis (Designed for Dreaming), Jason Speer (The Visitant) and Kraig W. Strutz. In ‘Harbinger Down’ two students and their professor board the ship ‘Harbinger’, a crabbing vessel, to study the effects of global warming on the migration pattern of whales. Sadie

Alec Gillis’ ‘Harbinger Down’ Now Out On DVD

‘Aliens’, ‘AVP’ and ‘Tremors’ are just a few of the movies Alec Gillis and his special effects company Amalgamated Dynamics (StudioADI) have worked on. Now Gillis has added writer and director to his resume. In ‘Harbinger Down’ a group of graduate students are in route to the Bering Sea to study the effects of global warming on a pod of Orcas, when the ship’s crew dredges up the remains of a Soviet space wreckage containing the frozen remains of a cosmonaut. What the crew does not know is that the Russians had experimented with tarigrades, microscopic creatures that can withstand the effects of space. The creatures survived, but were effected by the radiation in space. Now the crew has been exposed to the mutated microscopic beings. ‘Harbinger Down’ stars ‘Aliens’ actor Lance Henriksen, Matt Winston (A.I. Artificial Intelligence), Giovonnie Samuels (Freedom Writers), Winston James Francis (Little Boy) and ‘Whiplash’ actress Camille Balsamo, among others. With Gillis’ talent for special effects,
