#AmericanCarnage by Pochassic

#AmericanCarnage: Sci Fi Short Stories by Pochassic is a new short book by the author of Flesh Without Soul which I reviewed when it came out a few years ago. I was curious to see what this book offered after enjoying the other. Book Description: Sci-fi short stories from the edge of sanity, Endless Horizon, a family having a conversation at the end of the world. Enlightenment Sucks, not all sages are created equal. Pride, a heroic Janitor battles zombies. The Trial, obedience to Galactic Law is freedom. The Big Why SuperMarket, There is more going on in the frozen food aisle than you think. The book is only 22 pages long and filled with several science fiction stories. The stories aren’t related but do have an overarching theme of hopelessness as most occur in dire or dystopian situations. It makes for a very quick read (again, it’s 22 pages long), so it’s definitely worth it for Kindle Unlimited readers.

The Deep by Michaelbrent Collings

The Deep by Michaelbrent Collings is an interesting book. Typically when I think of sea monsters, or dangers in the ocean, my immediate thought is Jaws. This book takes that same, deeply rooted fear of both the unknown and the creatures which might dwell there, and exploits them. Initially readers aren’t quite sure of what is going on. The initial chapter hooks you in, while the remaining content provides content and further draws you into the story. (No fishing puns were intended in the writing of this review… But reading back over it, several appear. I apologize in advance.) Book Description: There are places we were never meant to go… *** A woman searching for a sister lost at sea. A man bent on finding lost treasure. A mother who has lost all hope. A maniac who believes all life exists for his pleasure. The man who would keep them all safe. Together, they will all seek below the waves

Review: She Walks in Shadows

She Walks In Shadows edited by Silvia Moreno-Garcia & Paula R. Stiles is very different from many of the books I’ve reviewed for Zombie Apocalypse Defense Force, before. It’s an anthology put out by an independent press which aspires to tell the stories of female authors whose works relate to or take place in the universe established by H.P. Lovecraft. Any horror fan worth their salt is familiar with Lovecraft’s work, so seeing the premise was enough to get me interested. The kind folks at Innsmouth Free Press were kind enough to send a copy of the book my way to review, and I am eager to share my thoughts with all of you. Book Description They emerge from the shadows, to claim the night …. Women from around the world delve into Lovecraftian depths, penning and illustrating a variety of Weird horrors. The pale and secretive Lavinia wanders through the woods, Asenath is a precocious teenager with an attitude,

Zombie Games (Origins) by Kristen Middleton

Aside: In honor of Women in Horror Month I will be reviewing a book or comic written by female authors or which prominently featuring female characters for each Monday in the month of February. There are plenty! This spotlight for female writers/characters in books and comics will be in addition to each of the Women in Horror Spotlights we are doing here at ZADF each day in February. (…and of course, this is also in addition to the sheer awesome Capt. McNeely and I contribute to the horror genre on a daily and weekly basis both on ZADF and beyond! ; ) ) At the bottom of each book review I will have links to the books discussed in previous weeks so that you can see who else has been featured! Description: Seventeen-year-old Cassandra Wild thought that living in the chaos of her mother’s home daycare and dealing with new feelings for Bryce, her martial arts instructor, was a struggle
