Movie Review: In the Earth

Warning note for potential viewers: In the Earth contains several strobe effects and should be avoided by those who have concerns regarding that. Writer/director Ben Wheatley returns to his British folk horror roots of Kill List (2011) and A Field in England (2013) with his latest U.K. feature, In the Earth. It’s an absolute trip — complete with psychedelic sequences — that plays on pandemic fears, isolation, and otherworldly nature entities. Dr. Martin Lowery (Joel Fry) arrives at a makeshift outpost in the forest during the third wave of a virus that has brought death and paranoia to the nation and beyond. He and park ranger Alma (Ellora Torchia) set out on a multiple-day hike to deliver materials to the research site where a missing colleague of Lowery’s, Dr. Olivia Wendle (Hayley Squires), has been out of contact for some time. ‘Meg 2’ Director Describes The Sequel As Being On An “Insanely Large Scale”

Back in 2018, The Meg (review) was unleashed. Now, the sequel is swimming towards us. Director Ben Whaetley (Kill List, High Rise, Rebecca) recently gave an update on the film that is said to be working with a $130-$180 budget. During a discussion with comicbook.com, the director had this to say: “A lot of it is respecting The Meg, and trying to make sure it’s a great Meg film. And as you can see from the movies I’ve made, they’re not necessarily … when you go and do Doctor Who, I don’t completely change it because I wanted to do it. I didn’t want to necessarily make it something completely different that nobody recognized, you know? So there’s that element of back and forth.” He continued, “But it’s an opportunity to do action on such an insanely large scale, that it’s just unbelievable. ‘The Meg 2’ Has Caught A Director

Earlier this week I sat down for an interview with best-selling author Steve Alten, the writer behind The Meg book series, which inspired the 2018 movie of the same name, starring Jason Statham. Alten informed us that the sequel was entering production. Today we can report that Kill List, High-Rise, and Rebecca director Ben Wheatley has now come on board to direct The Meg 2, which Alten describes as “much darker.” The news came from THR who also reports that Jason Statham is expected to return in a capacity that is “creatively involved,” with the movie adapted by Dean Georgaris and Jon Hoeber and Erich Hoeber. There is no word yet if anyone else is returning to reprise their roles. The Meg sunk its teeth into box offices bringing in over $500 million worldwide. Armie Hammer Joins The Fight Against Monsters In Freakshift

A new actor has joined Ben Wheatley’s monster flick Freakshift. Armie Hammer joins Alicia Vikander who was announced earlier in March. Armie Hammer, known for his roles in Nocturnal Animals, The Birth of a Nation, Entourage, and The Man from U.N.C.L.E., is set to play the love interest of Vikander’s character, the lead female protagonist. Co-written by Wheatley, Amy Jump, and Andrew Starke, the film is set in a world where monsters are very real and very dangerous. After five years, Ben Wheatley’s Freakshift is finally proceeding. Co-written by Amy Jump, the film takes place in a world where monsters are very real and very dangerous. When night falls the monsters leave their underground homes to hunt people. “Freakshift” is a crew of misfits organized by the government to hunt down and kill the beasts. Freakshift may have finally found its lead. Deadline is reporting that Oscar winner Alicia Vikander (Ex Machina) has entered negotiations to star as the lead female protagonist in the action-thriller. Filming is set to begin this August.
