Movie Review: Don’t Look Back

Writer-director Jeffrey Reddick has a ton of genre titles under his belt including creating the Final Destination franchise. Now, he’s back with a new tale of terror, Don’t Look Back, a haunting tale that follows a group of people who witness a man beaten to death in a park but do nothing to stop it. Soon after the murder paranormal activity begins to plague Caitlin (Kourtney Bell) who is still recovering from the murder of her father. When the witnesses begin to turn up dead, she sets out to get to the bottom of it. The cast, which also includes Will Stout, Skyler Hart, Jeremy Holm, Jaqueline Fleming, Amanda Grace Benitez, Han Soto, Damon Lipari, and Dean J. West, is not filled with well-known actors like you would expect it to be. I think, in the end, it actually works out better this way. It helps you to identify more with the characters and makes things a tad more believable.

The film is the feature debut of Jenn Wexler, a past Shudder Labs master, and producer of the SXSW Grand Jury Prize-winner, Most Beautiful Island. The festival favorite, which premiered at the Toronto After Dark Film Festival, follows a group of young punks who are forced to flee the city to lay low, only to run into a park ranger who shares a mysterious past with one of their own. The film has been lauded for its standout performances from Chloë Levine (The Transfiguration, The OA) as the pink-haired punk with a secret, and Jeremy Holm (House of Cards, “Mr. Robot”) as the maniacal ranger, ready to get his hands bloody in defense of the woods. Granit Lahu (“The Sinner”), Jeremy Pope, Bubba Weiler (Puzzle), Amanda Grace Benitez (School of Rock), Jeté Laurence (Pet Sematary) and horror icon Larry Fessenden (Habit, We Are Still Here)

Like Me, Most Beautiful Island, and Psychopaths‘ producer Jenn Wexler makes her directorial debut with The Ranger, which premieres Monday, March 12 in the Midnight Section at SXSW. Today the trailer has arrived giving a PSA turned nightmare feel. In the film, after “Chelsea and her friends get in trouble with the cops, they flee the city and go on the run. Fueled by a hallucinogenic drug called Echo, they hope to lay low-and get high-in an old family hideout in the woods. But Chelsea’s got reservations about going back to nature and secrets she’s not sharing with her friends. When a shot rings out, her past comes crashing back, and the punks find themselves pitted against the local authority- an unhinged park ranger with an axe to grind.” Jeremy Holm (Mr Robot), Chloe Levine (The OA), Amanda Grace Benitez (All Cheerleaders Die) co-star alongside Granit Lahu, Jeremy Pope, and Bubba Weiler.
