Cathedral: John Carpenter Returns with A New Soundtrack and Companion Graphic Novel

The Master of Horror is back, and this time, he’s trading the director’s chair for a comic book script and a heavy metal guitar riff. John Carpenter has officially announced Cathedral, a massive multimedia project featuring a brand-new studio album releasing this August on Sacred Bones Records, perfectly paired with his first-ever graphic novel dropping August 4 via Storm King Comics. To kick things off, Carpenter and his longtime musical partners-in-crime have unleashed the project’s roaring first single, “Lord Of The Underground,” available to stream right now alongside a gorgeously grim animated visualizer. A Movie For Your Eyes and Ears If you’ve been dying for a new John Carpenter flick (his last traditional feature film was back in 2010), Cathedral is the closest thing you’re going to get. Inspired by a vivid nightmare Carpenter had in 2024, the album isn’t just a collection of cool synth tracks—it is a literal, track-by-track soundtrack to the graphic novel. Each song corresponds to

Ella Rubin Joins Netflix’s “The God of the Woods” Adaptation

Summer camp is rarely a peaceful getaway in the world of thrillers, and Netflix’s upcoming prestige mystery is no exception. Ella Rubin (Until Dawn, Fear Street: Prom Queen) has officially signed on to join the sprawling, multi-generational adaptation of Liz Moore’s bestselling 2024 novel, The God of the Woods. Rubin joins a high-caliber ensemble that already includes Maya Hawke (Stranger Things) and Oscar nominee Kerry Condon (The Banshees of Inisherin). Wealth, Secrets, and a Missing Child Set against the deceptively scenic backdrop of the Adirondacks, the series tracks the slow-motion implosion of the ultra-wealthy Van Laar family. When 13-year-old Barbara Van Laar vanishes from her family’s summer camp, it forces a collision between the town’s distinct social classes and unearths an older family tragedy that everyone would prefer stayed buried. As the investigation deepens, the Van Laars’ immense wealth and influence begin to unravel, exposing the toxic side effects of extreme privilege and institutional power. The Suspects and Citizens The

If you thought co-living with your worst enemy was tough, try doing it in a crumbling, zombie-infested Manhattan. AMC has officially dropped the premiere date and a frantic new teaser for the third season of “The Walking Dead: Dead City,” proving that the apocalypse’s most awkward partnership is far from over. The Premise: Can Frenemies Build a Metropolis? Season three finds Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) attempting the ultimate post-apocalyptic pivot: putting aside their incredibly bloody history to construct the first thriving community in Manhattan since the world went to hell. But because this is “The Walking Dead,” peace lasts about as long as a New York minute. As chaos inevitably bubbles up through the subway grates, the duo is forced to confront a familiar question: Have they actually evolved beyond their old trauma, or will their toxic baggage bring the city’s new foundation crashing down around them? The Big Apple’s New Residents Alongside Morgan and Cohan,

How to Write Psychological Thrillers That Keep Readers Uneasy

A psychological thriller works best when something ordinary starts to feel wrong. A neighbor waves too late. A husband answers a question before it is asked. A woman finds a note in her own handwriting and cannot remember writing it. The genre does not need constant violence. It needs pressure, doubt, and characters who are hiding something from others, or from themselves. What Makes a Psychological Thriller Work A mystery usually leads readers toward a solution. A psychological thriller makes them question the person holding the flashlight. The real tension sits inside memory, guilt, obsession, fear, and trust. Use these elements carefully: a narrator whose version of events may be incomplete relationships with affection on the surface and control underneath secrets that change meaning later a setting that makes escape awkward or impossible twists that feel earned, not dropped in at the end The WSJ feature on unreliable narrators is useful for seeing how a shaky point of view can

Antosca, Scorsese, and Spielberg Team Up for “Cape Fear” – Watch the Trailer Now!

If your idea of a relaxing summer involves high-stakes psychological trauma and a cast with more Oscar nominations than a Beverly Hills gala, Apple TV+ has a gift for you. The streamer just dropped the first trailer for “Cape Fear.” The 10-episode limited series proves some grudges don’t have an expiration date. Led by showrunner Nick Antosca, the series manages a rare “prestige trifecta,” bringing together executive producers Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg. You don’t see a lineup of brilliance like this often. Academy Award winner Javier Bardem and Academy Award nominee Amy Adams join them. Bardem and Adams are also starring in this “must-see” series. A “Welcome Home” From Hell Inspired by the 1991 Scorsese remake and the original novel The Executioners, the story follows Anna (Amy Adams) and Tom Bowden (Patrick Wilson). They are happily married, incredibly successful attorneys. The “storm” arrives in the form of Max Cady (played by a presumably terrifying Javier Bardem). Cady is the

An Interview with the Showrunners of “The Terror: Devil in Silver”

After a seven-year hiatus that felt longer than a winter in the Arctic, AMC’s prestige horror anthology is finally back to remind us that being trapped in a room is much worse than being trapped in the tundra. “The Terror: Devil in Silver” officially premieres this May, on AMC+ and Shudder, with a linear run on AMC to follow later this year. This six-episode descent into madness moves the franchise away from historical shipwrecks and internment camps, landing squarely in the claustrophobic nightmare of a modern psychiatric ward. The series, which is based on the 2012 novel by Victor LaValle, follows Pepper (Dan Stevens), a working-class man whose “bad luck and bad temper” land him in New Hyde Psychiatric Hospital. Pepper quickly realizes that New Hyde is where society sends the people it wants to forget. Between the gaslighting doctors, the hostile patients, and a mysterious entity known as “The Devil” lurking in the shadows, Pepper’s struggle isn’t just about

The Beast is Close at Hand: Dystopian Series “Lord of the Flies” Lands on Netflix

Netflix recently shared the first trailer for its “Lord of the Flies” limited series adaptation of William Golding’s disturbing 1954 classic, and it brings back a flood of memories from when I was a kid, forced to read it in school like millions of others. Now, it’s coming home. Jack Thorne (Adolescence) adapted the book for television for the first time, with Marc Munden of “Utopia” serving as director. The story follows English schoolboys who crash-land on a desert island. Innocence quickly descends into absolute savagery as they fight for survival and ranking. The Trailer The trailer offers a glimpse at the initial, terrifying plane crash. It shows the boys at odds, calling each other “failures.” To add to the desperation, they fear who might be “next” on the chopping block. Tensions boil over as the group hunts one of their own survivors. “We have to kill the beast,” the trailer ominously concludes. This final line features newcomer David McKenna

The Cast of “The Institute” Talk Season One in Our Interview

“The Institute,” based on Stephen King’s novel, has been officially renewed for its second season by MGM+. Getting renewed was one of the topics discussed during my interview with the cast. “The Institute” follows the story of teen genius Luke Ellis (played by Joe Freeman). A young man who is kidnapped. He wakes up in a mysterious facility called The Institute. It’s a place filled with children who all arrived the same way he did. Meanwhile, haunted former police officer Tim Jamieson (played by Ben Barnes) has come looking to start a new life. However, peace won’t last for long. His story and Luke’s are destined to collide following a terrifying series of events. I recently sat down with three of the series’ stars: Joe Freeman (Luke), Simone Miller (Kalisha), and Fionn Laird (Nicky).
