Review: Dark Horse Comics’ ‘Harrow County #2’

I was so mesmerized by the first issue that I felt like I had been bewitched, not by Hester Beck, but by Cullen Bunn and Tyler Crook. The two of them had so masterfully woven together this supernatural southern gothic tale that I was enthralled with it immediately. I just couldn’t put it down, and as you can imagine, I could hardly wait to pick up issue #2. The second issue begins right where the last one ended. Emmy has realized that the skin suit that she has encountered is a “haint”. She quicky decides to take it with her. She leaves the woods with the skin suit folded in her arms. She takes it home and places it in a dresser drawer, away from the the watchful eyes of her Pa. Emmy states that she also does this because the “haint” is still a boy whether it has eyes or not and she has to change out of her

Review: Dark Horse Comics’ “Harrow County #1”

Dark Horse Comics’ Harrow County #1 is a phenomenal paranormal masterpiece. The superb story-telling is further reinforced by exquisitely eerie watercolor art. The tale begins with the townspeople lynching a local healing woman, Hester Beck, who had been their neighbor and friend. They tolerated her gifts even when they were accompanied by unnatural signs. Well, that is until they found out what evil deeds fed and strengthened her powers. They were afraid that this “healer” might be able to mend her broken body so they shot, stabbed, beat, and burned her just to make sure. With her dying breath she forebode that she would be back, that this was not the end. She warned them that she would revisit them and repay them for their sins. Flash forward and we find Emmy, a farm girl who is suffering from nightmares about an old misshapen tree and afflicted with visions of “haints”, the long forgotten ghosts of Harrow County. Her father

Video Game Review: DeadRising 3

Dead Rising 3 came out 2 years ago as a launch game exclusive to the Xbox One, It’s the third installment in the “Dead Rising” series and aimed to not only improve the series but introduce “Next-Gen’ gaming to everyone and honestly it kind of did. The “Dead Rising” series has been about letting players loose into a zombie apocalypse and really just had you surviving for 7 days waiting for the military and during those 3 days let you do whatever whether it be fighting bosses, rescuing other survivors or discovering the truth behind the outbreak and the games always had multiple endings to attribute to how you played the game, so if you just ran through it you’d probably get a bad ending with everyone dying or if you completed everything gave you a good ending, I am personally not sure because I had always gotten bored with “Dead Rising 1 & 2” mainly due to the cluttered

Review: SpellBound Comics’ “Year of the Goat #1”

Question: What is black and white and red all over? Answer: A kick-ass comic about the goatpocalypse! 2015 is the Year of the Goat according to the Chinese Zodiac and it may just be right. The night that I recieved a copy of this book to review, a trending hashtag on Twitter was #AddGoatRuinAQuote. You may be able to ruin a quote by adding a goat, but if you add a whole bunch of goats to a horror/slasher comic about demonic possession, then you can’t go wrong. This book is proof of that. Now, I must admit that this book isn’t for everyone. Of course, I only say that because it is intended for mature audiences only. The story starts off on a farm in the southern United States, when a black bird lands and seems to whisper into the ear of a goat. The goat then becomes possessed and is suddenly endowed with the ability to walk and even

Breaking News: Kirkman to allow Eisner winner Brian K. Vaughan to write “The Walking Dead”

At the Image Expo, The Walking Dead’s Robert Kirkman made a deal with Saga creator Brian K. Vaughan and artist Marcos Martin. This deal will allow Vaughan and Martin to do a Walking Dead one-shot story on their site Panel Syndicate. In exchange Kirkman, who is a partner at Image, will be able to make Vaughan and Martin’s digital comic Private Eye available for the first time in print through Image Comics. Vaughan, who has won the Eisner award multiple times, and artist Marcos Martin created the site Panel Syndicate where you can pay whatever amount you want to read digital comics. This will be an exclusive one time deal and will mark not only the first time that Private Eye will see print, but the first time that Kirkman will not be the writer of The Walking Dead. Rumor is that the deal will come to fruition this November.

Comic Book Review for Dark Horse Comics’ Midnight Society: The Black Lake #1

I just picked up Dark Horse Comics’ Midnight Society: The Black Lake #1 and after reading this review it should be evident that you should too. This book is the brainchild of Drew Edward Johnson who serves as the creator, writer, and artist. It also features Lizzy John as the colorist and the lettering of Steve Dutro. It is the first part of a four part miniseries and debuted on June 10th 2015. Johnson has skillfully combined the elements of steampunk, action-adventure, horror, and mystery into a tale that is hard to put down. The mixture is a wonderful concoction with flavors reminiscent of The Rocketeer, Indiana Jones, Hellboy, B.P.R.D. and the like. It pays homage to a lot of different genres and does it well. That and the name alone reminds me of my favorite Nickelodeon show, Are You Afraid of the Dark?. The masterful storytelling is complemented and furthered along with out of this world artwork, pun intended.

Until Dawn: Innovative Horror spectacular or Generic Yawn Fest?

“Until Dawn” is a PS4 exclusive horror survival game coming out this August and thanks to E3 we’ve seen a whole lot of new game-play and learned some new information on it. The basic plot of the game is about how 8 friends are having a reunion together in a cabin up on a snowy hill. This is also on the anniversary of the disappearance of their friends Beth and Hannah who are twin sisters. Eventually the 8 friends learn that they are being hunted down by a serial killer and must survive until dawn. The main ploy that this game is advertising is what the developers are calling the “butterfly effect” a super tight save system in the game that forces you to make hard decisions and then has you face those repercussions head on unlike other choice-based games where you can just reload the save in case you regret your decision “Until Dawn” will make sure your choices

Video Game Review: Evolve

“Evolve” is the newest First Person Shooter from ‘Left 4 Dead” developers Turtle Rock Studios, available right now for XBOX ONE, Playstation 4 and PC. “Evolve” sells itself as the newest innovator of the FPS genre by throwing out the generic “Player Vs Player death match” formula and opts out to introduce what they are calling “4V1” asymmetric shooter. It stars 4 hunters, each controlled by human players, and pits them up against a monster who is also controlled by a human. Basically it has the hunters hunting the monster and killing it or the monster evolving to stage three and have it kill the hunters. Very cool idea but what the final product was disappointing. Now let me explain it a bit. The game is set on the planet “Sheer”, a small colonized planet currently be destroyed by an indigenous race of monsters. With Sheer’s defense force dwindling, they are forced to call in hunters to hunt down and

“The Walking Dead” is back and it’s not the long awaited Sixth season but a return to the video game media. Just announced today slightly under the radar, Telltale will be developing part mini series titled “Michonne” where you play as the katana wielding, zombie chaining and eye stabbing (wink-wink) Michonne. According to Telltale’s blog the story will take place in the comic book continuity between issues #129 and #139. It will inform players of how Michonne left the group and her return back so if you’re a fan of the comics you are in for some lovey back story. “The Walking Dead: Michonne – A Telltale mini series” is scheduled to release this fall on PC, Xbox One, Playstation 4, Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and all compatible iOS and Android based devices.
