THEM Episode 1 of Season 1 by M.D. Massey

THEM Episode 1 of Season 1 by M.D. Massey is a self described “paranormal post-apocalyptic thrill ride”. As with Champagne Jackson Kicks Zombie Ass, THEM immediately had some large shoes to fill by virtue of its tagline and book description. Description: THEM: Season 1, Episode 1 Scratch Sullivan is a professional monster hunter eking out a living after the zombie apocalypse. Z hunter, some would say… but he hunts more than just zombies. You see, there are deadlier predators roaming the badlands, where the fallout and some very nasty inhabitants have made it impossible for all but the bravest and most foolhardy to venture. Thing is, Scratch is happy enough with the odd job killing THEM and occasionally shacking up with his on and off girlfriend, Kara. But when a powerful vampire tips him off to a potential invasion of werewolves and zombies into the safe zone he protects, he’s forced to head straight into the heart of the deadlands

Damn The Dead by Phillip Tomaso

Phillip Tomasso is a fairly prolific author, especially in horror/supernatural categories. I added Damn the Dead to my reading queue months ago, and am just getting around to reading it. Evidently, although it is his new Arcadia series, it is a continuation in the sense that one of the main characters is from his Vaccination trilogy. That book is also on my to read list, but as I had scheduled Damn the Dead for this week it appears we’ll be looking at just how well this book stands apart from its predecessor. Synopsis: *Damn The Dead marks the beginning of an exciting new stand-alone series from Phillip Tomasso and takes place some 3 years after the conclusion of the best-selling Vaccination Trilogy. Even in the heat of the zombie apocalypse, a time must come to rebuild. Charlene McKinney and her friends are on the run in the mountain ranges of North Carolina. They’ve stolen an 18 wheeler filled with food

Flesh Without Soul by Pochassic

Flesh Without Soul is the debut novel of author Pochassic. The book is different than many of the books I’ve reviewed here on ZADF because unlike many in our beloved sub-genre of zombie fiction, this novel is complete. It doesn’t attempt to jump start a series, it’s a stand alone story which is incredibly unique. Book Description: What would you do to save the world? Eliminate racism? End Religious intolerance? Or simply destroy evil all together? Michael Kerr, a recent drop out from his PHD program in bioengineering, is sure he can save the world. It’s a simple plan. Kill everyone on the planet who doesn’t believe in God. Problem is Michael’s unfaltering belief that he is the one and only true God. Now that his plan to cleanse the world has been unleashed all he needs to do is tie up a few loose ends. First save his sister Kara, who runs a small pizza joint in town, and

Lost World by Kate L. Mary

Lost World by Kate L. Mary is the fourth book in the Broken World series. Aside from Ryan Casey’s Dead Days, this is the only zombie series I have been eager to continue reading. I am still working my way through Casey’s first season of Dead Days, but something about Mary’s Broken World series keeps reeling me back in each time I get an ARC from her! Description: Lost World, the fourth book in the Broken World series, continues following a group of survivors after a super-virus has destroyed the world and the dead have come back to claim it as their own… With their shelter destroyed and their sense of security shattered, Vivian, Axl and the group set off in search of a safe place. But the group’s morale is at an all-time low, and they now know it’s not just the dead they have to fear. Weeks of wandering brings sickness, death and loss to the survivors, and

Women in Horror Spotlight: Justina Walford

This week’s Women in Horror spotlight was selected, I confess, due to the fact that her wonderful new horror flick The Ladies of the House is out on VOD this week. (May 1st to be exact; mark it on your calendars!) She and her husband John Stuart Wildman are the writing team/creative whirlwind that is responsible for bringing the horror genre a story about rockabilly cannibal strippers. (Yes, you read right! Rockabilly. Cannibal. Strippers.) The film is an incredible joy to watch. Walford has been a huge part of the creation of the suspense driven thriller which is ridden with symbolism, foreshadowing, and excellent use of costume design and other elements to explain aspects of a story which would otherwise be unknown to the viewer. If you enjoy thinking and predicting outcomes in films as much as you enjoy viewing all the gorey details, you’ll love The Ladies of the House. Although her previous credits don’t include many horror titles,

Every Zombie Eats Somebody Sometime: A Book of Zombie Love Songs

This week I’m changing it up for the zombie comic or book review and am featuring a comedic parody book. Every Zombie Eats Somebody Sometime: A Book of Zombie Love Songs by Michael P. Spradlin and Illustrated by Jeff Weigel is an incredibly entertaining read and was a nice break from the depressing tales of the zombie-ridden wastelands that typically grace the would be shelves of ZADF. The premise of the book, according to the Author’s note, is that even zombies need love songs… Or rather, those left when the zombies strike, do. (If you’ve been watching the CW’s new series iZombie based on the comic of the same name, that would certainly seem to be true.) The basic idea is that sometime in your past with the love of your life (who is in all likelihood about to turn into zombie chow), you shared a favorite love song. This book is filled with zombie themed parodies to remind you

Odium by Claire C. Riley

Odium (Dead Saga Book 1) by Claire C. Riley is a book I’ve had on my ‘to read’ radar for a while. I was intrigued by the idea that Riley polled Facebook users in order to use them in her book. As far as indie authors go, especially those who write zombies or horror fiction, she had a decent pool to choose from with over 3,000 Facebook fans at her disposal. (A feat for small scale publishing, to be sure.) Her website claims that she intends to bring a modern spin to classic horror. The site also named Romero as one of her influences, so I was optimistic to say the least. Description: It’s better to die by the gun than die by the dead. Nina’s life was irrevocably changed when humanity’s dead began to rise. Now, she lives behind the walls. The barricaded cities, erected by the government to protect the remnants of civilization, have become a brutal dictatorship-

Planet Urth (Book 1) by Jennifer & Christopher Martrucci

Planet Urth (Book 1) by Jennifer & Christopher Martucci is different than the majority of the zombie fiction I have reviewed on Zombie Apocalypse Defense Force because it isn’t actually intended to be zombie fiction, but it still is a very interesting, relevant read for zombie fans. The world has changed. It’s dangerous, deadly. Inhuman creatures rule the planet. Animals have mutated. The land is hostile. But it’s all I’ve ever known. Hunger. Fear. Panic. Those emotions are my reality. They are my every day. I am Avery, and I am seventeen. My father died a year ago. Since then I’ve been responsible for my eight-year-old sister, June. I worry we are the only humans left. Humans have been hunted for centuries, to the brink of extinction. I must fight each day to protect my sister. It is the reason I wake, the reason I breathe. But how long can I go on fighting? How long will it be before

“Women In Horror Spotlight”: Mary Harron

Mary Harron is this week’s featured Women in Horror spotlight recipient. This woman has written and directed a variety of horror films, both classic and contemporary. She is the creative voice behind the screenplay for American Psycho (2000), the film adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis’ novel about serial killer Patrick Bateman. She also went on to direct the film. Her knack for writing and directing horror was further exemplified with her work on the 2011 release, The Moth Diaries. Since then she has worked on a variety of horror themed (or very close to horror) television projects, ranging from NBC’s Constantine to FOX’s The Following. Mary Harron’s career has spanned over 25 years, with a variety of short film, television, and feature film projects. I look forward to seeing where else it takes her.

Dead Days Season One Episode Two by Ryan Casey

(Pardon the author picture. The only cover image I could find for Episode Two was tiny!) Back in January I reviewed Ryan Casey’s best selling Dead Days Season One, Episode One. He was kind enough to send me a copy of the Dead Days Complete Season One Collection (Books 1-6) that is currently available on Amazon (and a myriad of other retailers) to check out and review. So far I have only gotten through Season One Episode Two, but what a ride! Scene Description: 5/5 I may have said it before, but I’ll say it again. I love Casey’s writing style. The level of detail put into each and every scene really drives whatever emotion or action is featured home. There are truly devastating scenes in Dead Days S1E2, just as there are thrilling action sequences. Although the description is often gory (as zombie fiction tends to mandate…), it is still eloquent and very beautiful. My favorite comparison comes from
